Job Description
Performs a variety of technical procedures requiring independent judgment in the application of non-ionizing, high-frequency ultrasonic waves for diagnosis of disease. Trained in either echocardiography or other ultrasound procedures.
Job Responsibilities
- Patient Preparation
- Prepares patient for exam.
- Determines whether reviews by Radiologist are required prior to examination.
- Positions patient on examination table for optimal testing conditions.
- Explains procedures in layman's terms to alleviate patient anxiety.
- Sets up equipment for specific procedures promptly.
- Positions patient for scanning of various organs according to departmental SOPs.
- Ultrasound Procedures
- Performs ultrasound procedures including abdominal, retroperitoneal, obstetrics, breast, gynecology, and Doppler.
- Recognizes significance of visualized structures and differentiates artifacts from normal or pathological findings.
- Ensures proper views and images are obtained using real-time systems; determines if further evaluation is needed.
- Uses machine settings judiciously to ensure accurate results.
- Clinical Correlation and Documentation
- Obtains relevant radiological and diagnostic reports for physician review.
- Consults with referring radiologist regarding patient history and required ultrasound procedures.
- Correlates clinical history to ensure appropriate procedures are performed.
- Monitors and observes patient condition throughout the exam.
- Recognizes and reports changes in patient condition or complaints such as fainting or discoloration.
- Maintains records and logs of exams performed.
- Documents slice location and labels studies appropriately.
- Ensures proper documentation of real-time studies on videotape.
- Equipment Maintenance and Troubleshooting
- Performs minor repairs, calibration checks, and equipment adjustments as necessary.
- Troubleshoots mechanical problems and reports major issues to management.
- Additional Duties
- Performs related duties as required.
ADA Essential Functions
Job Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Graduation from an approved ultrasound program with knowledge of anatomy, physiology, physics, and diagnostic ultrasound; familiarity with relevant medical/surgical conditions.
- Registration in one of the following:
- Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS)
- Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS)
- Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT)
- Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) with Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).
