Job summary

Uihlein Electric is seeking a Building Automation Systems (BAS) Technician to install, wire, startup, diagnose, and troubleshoot building automation and control systems for commercial and industrial clients.

You will work closely with electricians, project managers, HVAC contractors, TAB contractors, commissioning agents, and customers to deliver safe, reliable, and well-documented BAS installations and support. The role emphasizes safety and quality workmanship with growth opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Prior BAS technician experience and knowledge of NEC requirements.
  • Familiarity with BACnet or other BAS communication protocols.
  • Ability to read electrical drawings and control schematics.

Responsibilities

  • Perform BAS installations for commercial and industrial customers.
  • Electrical control wiring, low-voltage wiring, and cabling; troubleshooting and diagnostics.
  • Develop knowledge of HVAC systems including VAV, pumps, chiller equipment.
  • Adhere to NEC and industry practices; verify field installations against drawings.
  • Maintain accurate labeling, redline drawings, and project records.
  • Adapt to changing project requirements and schedules; perform other duties as needed.

Purpose: The Building Automation Systems (BAS) Technician is responsible for the installation, wiring, startup support, diagnostics, and troubleshooting of building automation and control systems for commercial and industrial customers. This position works closely with electricians, controls technicians, project managers, HVAC contractors, TAB contractors, commissioning agents, and customers to deliver safe, reliable, and properly documented control systems.

Essential Duties
  • Performing BAS installations for commercial and industrial customers
  • Daily tasks include building automation systems installations, electrical control work, wiring and cabling, troubleshooting and diagnostics
  • Develop working knowledge of HVAC systems including air-handling units, VAV systems, pumps, boilers, chillers, cooling towers, VFDs, and related mechanical equipment
  • Adhere to current NEC and industry related practices, including area classifications
  • Verify field installations against approved drawings, specifications, manufacturer requirements, and project standards
  • Maintain professional demeanor with both colleagues, customers, subcontractors, and other trades
  • Maintain accurate device labeling, redline drawings, checkout documentation, and other project records
  • Adapt to changing project requirements, schedules, and field conditions
  • Performs other assigned duties as needed
Qualifications
  • Prior experience in building automation controls technician work
  • Working knowledge of electrical controls, relays, motor starters, and variable-frequency drives.
  • Experience with electrical control wiring, low-voltage systems, project installation, testing, or troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current NEC and industry-related practices
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving ability
  • Familiarity with BACnet, MS/TP, BACnet/IP, or other BAS communication protocols
  • Ability to interpret HVAC sequences of operation and trace system cause-and-effect
  • Experience with controller addressing, network troubleshooting, and basic BAS system architecture
  • Ability to use BAS software to viewpoints, commands, alarms, schedules, and trends
  • Familiarity with lighting control, electrical metering, emergency power, or other integrated building systems
  • Experience working in schools, hospitals, manufacturing facilities, commercial offices, or data centers
  • Interest in progressing toward BAS startup, programming, commissioning, project supervision
  • Adheres to professional conduct in addressing issues with appropriate parties
  • Ability to read electrical drawings and control schematics
  • Demonstrated commitment to safe work practices, quality workmanship, documentation, and professional conduct
  • Ability to use electrical test equipment safely and systematically
  • Ability to work independently while communicating effectively with project supervision and other trades
Physical Requirements
  • Able to work off all types of ladders, lifts and elevated platforms (electric or gas powered)
  • Able to work at various heights up to 50 feet from ladders, scaffolds, aerial lifts, cat walks, or other safe work areas
  • Able to work in restricted areas, manholes, utility tunnels, crawl spaces and attics
  • Able to bend, stoop, squat, crawl, climb, kneel, balance, push, pull, and reach overhead
  • Able to carry tools and materials up to 50 pounds from the ground to overhead
  • Able to constantly move on feet, climbing ladders and working overhead
  • Possess good vision (normal or corrected)
  • Must be able to get to various customer sites as required
