We are hiring a Ubuntu Core Software Engineer to innovate the Linux experience in embedded environments with the smallest, most secure, and updatable OS in the IoT market. This role is ideal for someone passionate about open source, Linux, security, and developer experience, requiring high technical skill in low-level OS, kernel, and device firmware development.

Our mission is to enable building robust solutions in IoT, automotive, aviation, and other fields using a secure embedded Linux OS. We focus on device recovery mechanisms to simplify fleet management of heterogeneous devices.

As part of the Ubuntu Core team, you'll work on software for various CPU architectures such as ARM, RISC-V, and x86, focusing on boot mechanisms, bootloaders, storage, device trees, kernel, and services.

Location

This role will be based remotely in the EMEA region.

Role Responsibilities
  1. Write high-quality code with unit tests to develop new features.
  2. Debug Linux system-level issues and produce fixes.
  3. Collaborate proactively with a distributed team.
  4. Review code from other engineers.
  5. Discuss ideas and collaborate on solutions.
  6. Integrate diverse bootloaders and maintain gadget snaps.
  7. Work from home with global travel 2-4 times a year for events.
Candidate Requirements
  • Passion for technology and working with talented people.
  • Curiosity, flexibility, articulation, and accountability.
  • Soft skills: passionate, enterprising, thoughtful, self-motivated.
  • Bachelor's or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM, or similar.
  • Experience with C or Golang, Shell scripting.
  • Solid understanding of Linux, preferably Debian or Ubuntu.
  • Experience with Linux-capable devices like Raspberry Pi.
  • Interest or experience in low-level systems and security facilities such as bootloaders (ARM/X86), systemd, udev, initrd, Linux security (TPM, FDE, LUKS, HSM).
  • Knowledge of Yocto is a plus.
