Job summary

ART RUTKIN ELEMENTARY in Tigard, Oregon seeks an Instructional Assistant for the Two Way Immersion Pre-K program. You will work under licensed teachers to implement instructional activities and support multilingual students across small groups.

The role requires Spanish literacy, strong English usage, and the ability to assist with differentiated instruction. This is a 0.469 FTE (3.75 hours) position with a temporary term and immediate start after hire.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma with reading and writing in Spanish and English.
  • Two years of post-secondary college education.
  • Bilingual, preferably native Spanish speaker.
  • Oregon Driver's License or ability to commute to work.
  • Associates Degree in Education preferred.
  • Medic First Aid Card (must be certified within 60 days of employment).

Responsibilities

  • Under supervision of licensed teachers, assist in instructional programs for Two Way Immersion students.
  • Prepare instructional materials and differentiate small-group instruction.
  • Reinforce classroom routines and support classroom management.
  • Provide back-up support to other school positions as needed.
  • Attend district in-service and educational activities.
  • Escort and monitor students in classrooms, on buses, and during field trips.

JOB TITLE:Instructional Assistant - TWI PRE-K

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Building level administrator

FTE:.469 (3.75 hours)

START DATE:As soon as possible after hire

GENERAL DUTIES SUMMARY

Under the direct supervision of teachers, performs a variety of duties in assisting a licensed teacher in the implementation of instructional programs for students in Two Way Immersion programming. May function in an instructional setting separate from the teacher, exercising a considerable degree of skill with supervision within the framework of a teacher-planned and evaluated program. Prepares instructional materials, teaches differentiated small groups, reinforces classroom routines and expectation, and conducts planned activities using teacher designated methods. Provides additional scaffolding and support for any students that need it to be successful. Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Implements planned activities using teacher designated methods and materials for individuals and small groups for the purpose of instructional support
  • Proficient English usage, grammar and punctuation skills
  • Reinforces classroom expectations and behavior support plans
  • Provides back-up support to other positions in the school in case of absence or work overload
  • Performs related duties as assigned
  • Attend District-provided in-service and educational activities
  • Escort and monitor students in environment (including classroom, playground, cafeteria, buses, field trips, etc.)
  • Employ good judgment in a variety of situations
  • Work effectively with students with diverse needs
  • Demonstrate the ability to acquire new skills and obtain new information necessary to work effectively with multilingual students and students with disabilities
  • Demonstrate skills necessary to be an effective member of a team
  • Communicate effectively with parents, including English/foreign language translation
  • Help with and/or monitor student's completion of classroom assignments
  • Assist teachers in preparing and maintaining instructional materials and maintain files
  • Practice instructional practices, procedures and equipment
  • Effectively using appropriate communications with other employees and students by exercising tact, courtesy, and good judgment
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with students, parents, teachers and other employees
  • Working with accuracy and attention to detail to meet deadlines
  • Understanding and executing oral and written instructions, policies, and procedures

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION, FUNCTIONS, AND CAPABILITIES

  • High school diploma reflecting reading, writing, speaking proficiencies in Spanish and English
  • Two years of post-secondary college education
  • If a candidate meets all other qualifications, except the two years of post-secondary education, they may be hired on the condition when the Department of Education develop a proficiency test they will need to pass the test to remain in the position
  • REQUIRED Bilingual (prefer native Spanish-speaker)
  • Oregon Driver's License, or ability to get to and from work in a timely manner and perform the essential functions of the position
  • Associates Degree in Education is preferred - 2 years college required
  • Medic First Aid Card (must be certified within the first 60 days of employment)
  • Other certifications/trainings as required to execute the Essential Functions and Duties and
  • Responsibilities of this position may include blood sugar testing, bee sting, dispensing of prescription medication
  • Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in a classroom setting
  • High school graduation or GED math level would be sufficient to perform the essential functions and duties and responsibilities of this position

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • See near and far (i.e. constant observation of students)
  • Discriminate colors (i.e. teaching colors)
  • Hear sufficiently to perform the duties and responsibilities(i.e. understand speech which may be difficult to understand, listening for distress signals)
  • Medium lifting occurs occasionally (20-50 lbs)
  • Lifting occurs frequently (0-20 lbs)
  • There is occasional light to medium carrying of supplies and equipment
  • Pulling/pushing occurs occasionally (i.e. wheelchair, vacuuming, open/close doors, gait trainer and stander)
  • Crawling, kneeling, climbing, cramped spaces and repeated bending occurs occasionally to frequently in the course of a day (i.e. toileting, loading bus, machinery control, working on same level as student, picking up trash, assisting student in bathroom)
  • Balance upper body and hand/wrist movement occur often to frequent in the course of a day (i.e. assist with student balance, coordination in movement, writing, grabbing, keyboards, reaching, stretching)
  • Occasional use of household cleaning type chemicals (i.e. bleach)
  • Occasional use of glues
  • May be exposed to blood and body fluids (i.e. spitting, feeding, changing, biting)
  • May be exposed to bees, pollens, head lice may occur occasionally to frequently
  • Work for the most part is performed indoors with some outdoor activity. Employee may occasionally be exposed to inclement weather during supervision and field trips. Employees must have the physical ability to lift up to twenty-five pounds, reach, grasp, kneel, squat, walk, and stand. Employees may be exposed to occasional loud noises during supervision.

EVALUATION

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions in the Collective Bargaining Agreement between Tigard-Tualatin School District 23J and Oregon School Employees Association Chapter 51.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a 10-month assignment on theHrange of the Classified Job Schedule. The assignment of the step will be in compliance with the current Collective Bargaining Agreement and range of pay is located in the current Classified Salary Schedule
