Job summary

Fort Bend ISD in Sugar Land seeks an AVID Tutor to work directly with AVID students in secondary school tutorial settings and assist them with college preparatory courses, readiness strategies, and academic planning.

You will facilitate group problem solving, support inquiry, and help students prepare for college applications, timelines, and financial aid, collaborating with the AVID Site Coordinator and teachers.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required; Associate's Degree preferred.
  • Strong background in science and mathematics as indicated on transcript.
  • AP courses completed in high school preferred.
  • Ability to use AVID strategies and collaborate with teachers.

Responsibilities

  • Interact with AVID students using tutorial request forms and provide feedback.
  • Facilitate problem-solving groups in the AVID classroom.
  • Become familiar with AVID strategies and methodologies used by the AVID teachers and students.
  • Critique and evaluate AVID student binders.
  • Support AVID students in writing, inquiry, critical reading, and collaboration.
  • Assist AVID students with college readiness including timeline, search, application, and financial assistance.
  • Meet regularly with the AVID Site Coordinator/Elective Teacher to discuss student progress and future tutorial plans.

Position Description
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Interact with AVID students by using tutorial request forms and provide tutorial feedback
  • Facilitate problem solving groups in the AVID classroom
  • Become familiar with AVID strategies and methodologies used by the AVID teachers and students
  • Critique and evaluate AVID student binders
  • Support AVID students in the process of writing, inquiry, critical reading, and collaboration
  • Support AVID students in their understanding and use of Costa's three levels of inquiry
  • Assist AVID students with the college readiness process including timeline, search, application, and financial assistance
  • Participate in AVID tutor training
  • Meet and interact regularly with the AVID Site Coordinator/Elective Teacher and discuss student progress and future tutorial plans
  • Participate, as necessary, in university/college visits with the AVID students
  • Be an advocate for the AVID students and work with the AVID Site Coordinator/Elective Teacher

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Strong use of content knowledge in science, mathematics, and other middle and high school curricula
  • Have successfully completed Advanced Placement (AP) courses in high school (as noted on transcript) preferred

Additional Information
  • Walking, standing, bending, and sitting for several hours at a time. Commuting to FBISD middle and high school campuses will be required. Generally, the work involves exposure to normal, everyday risks.
