Job description

Harlem Children’s Zone (HCZ) — a world-renowned education and poverty-fighting organization based in New York — seeks an enthusiastic, dedicated, and mission aligned Tutor to support the Academic Support Unit.

The Tutor will bring a passion for the mission of Harlem Children’s Zone: break the cycle of intergenerational poverty with comprehensive, on-the-ground programming that builds up opportunities for children and families to thrive in school, work, and life.

The Tutor will join our Academic Support Unit team to help provide structured academic support and guidance to our students throughout the school year. The ideal candidate will ensure that students meet or exceed grade-level standards and expectations within a given subject area. Tutors must be able to motivate and maintain the students' interest while setting a positive example in all areas, including timeliness, attendance, and professionalism. Additionally, Tutors must take a sincere, active, and appropriate interest in the well-being of all students.

Who You Are
  • A commitment to the mission and programs of HCZ
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Ability to create basic lesson plans preferred
  • Familiarity with Common Core Standards is a huge plus
What You’ll Do
  • Work one-on-one and in small groups with students to provide them with academic intervention
  • Partner with Academic Support Team to develop and implement instructional strategies
  • Regularly provide and/or exchange student information with program staff, as appropriate
  • Document all tutoring sessions in the Tutor Log, detailing student interactions, achievements, and any potential concerns
  • Periodically administer assessments and collaborate with staff to analyze scores
  • Perform other duties assigned
Schedule
  • Spring & Fall Monday through Friday 2:00pm-6:00pm, 3:00pm-7:00pm, 3:30-7:30pm
  • Summer Hours Monday - Friday 9:00am-1:00pm
