Technique is seeking a Tube Laser Technician for our Jackson, Michigan facility. You will manage materials flow, inventory accuracy, and perform laser tube cutting operations with setup, programming, and process improvements.

Strong measurement, blueprint reading, and MRP (E2) skills are highly valued. The role requires ability to operate forklifts and cranes, work manufacturing shifts, and maintain safety standards in a dynamic environment.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Perform receiving inspection of materials and components.

Job description

Technique is looking for a Tube Laser Technician to join our team at our Jackson, Michigan facility. This position reports to the Tubing Manager and is responsible for managing all aspects of materials flow and maintaining control and accuracy over all inventories, including all transactions, procurement, and receiving into the tube and fabrication department. The role is additionally responsible for performing all aspects of tube laser operation, maintenance, programming, and process improvements, including metal fabrication using tube laser cutting machinery. This position requires the ability to make fast and accurate decisions relating to the production process and equipment, along with a good understanding of the details of the product to be manufactured, including size, tolerance, and use. This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

The ideal candidate brings a high school diploma or GED, vocational training (STEM Program, Career Center, or Technical Trades Training), and experience with overhead cranes and forklifts used in material handling, and must meet licensing requirements to operate forklifts and cranes. The ability to read and interpret blueprints, proficiency with measuring instruments such as micrometers and calipers, experience working in an MRP system such as E2, and experience operating laser tube cutting equipment are all strong assets in this role.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform receiving inspection – Perform basic receiving inspection of all materials, including tubing and customer-supplied components for assembly orders.
  • Organize and sort materials – Clean, organize, and sort materials to maintain traceability, product identification, first in first out (FIFO) inventory management, and other duties as assigned by the Tubing Manager.
  • Coordinate inventory levels – Work with order entry and purchasing to maintain proper inventory levels and locations of common tubing and verify quantity on hand for upcoming jobs.
  • Manage inventory in E2 – Accurately manage tubing inventory in E2.
  • Communicate with sales and customers – Professionally communicate and coordinate with the sales team and customers to aid in procuring supplied materials.
  • Use measurement tools – Use all basic measurement tools needed in receiving product (height gauge, tape measure, micrometer, calipers, and GE sonic gauge).
  • Load and unload materials – Safely and efficiently load and unload materials utilizing forklifts and overhead crane.
  • Use Microsoft Office Suite – Use Microsoft Office Suite to perform daily tasks efficiently.
  • Perform equipment maintenance – Perform daily and weekly maintenance on laser tube cutting equipment to ensure readiness for operation.
  • Perform startup and shutdown – Follow proper procedures to perform initial startup and shutdown of laser tube cutting equipment.
  • Manage part programs – Import, maintain, and batch part programs for efficient production.
  • Select and verify material – Select and verify proper material for jobs through receiver tracking and use of standard measuring equipment.
  • Set laser parameters – Select proper technology parameters and focus on laser.
  • Perform job setup – Correctly perform job setup processes on laser tube cutting equipment for efficient production.
  • Maintain work area – Maintain an organized and efficient work area for processes being performed (material staged, racks and tubes, deburring operations, etc.).
  • Perform 1st piece layouts – Perform 1st piece surface plate layout using basic quality tools for all parts running on lasers.
  • Complete quality documentation – Follow and complete proper quality documentation for each job ran (inspection reports, work in progress tags, 1st piece tags, and job router step sign-offs).
  • Maintain safety and lockout compliance – Maintain a safe work environment and follow lock out procedure on laser tube cutting equipment.
  • Develop process improvements – Develop process improvements to optimize the efficiency of the role and the tubing department.
  • Make production decisions – Make fast and accurate decisions relating to the production process and equipment.
  • Meet deadlines – Consistently meet deadlines for production requirements.
Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Vocational training preferred (STEM Program, Career Center, or Technical Trades Training)
  • Experience with overhead crane and forklifts used in material handling
  • Must meet licensing requirements to operate forklifts and cranes
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints preferred
  • Proficiency in using measuring instruments (e.g., micrometers, calipers) to inspect own work in accordance with specifications and requirements preferred
  • Experience working in an MRP system (e.g., E2) to track and manage inventory preferred
  • Experience operating laser tube cutting equipment preferred
  • Ability to coordinate and communicate professionally to perform tasks effectively
  • Commitment to safe work practices as clearly defined within company and department-specific safety procedures
  • Ability to work overtime and maintain flexibility in work schedule
  • Ability to frequently lift and/or move items over 50 pounds
  • This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day
  • Regularly required to talk and hear
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
  • Comfortable working in a manufacturing environment with exposure to fumes or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, moving mechanical parts, industrial equipment, vibration, and loud noise
  • No travel expected for this position

Position Type and Expected Hours:

This is a full-time, non-exempt position with a minimum of 40 hours per week with overtime as needed. Note: days and hours required may vary. Flexibility is required in all positions.
