Job summary

Fieldstone A&E is seeking a Truss Repair Designer to join our team. You will work with clients, architects, and engineers to develop clear repair designs for roof and floor trusses and related engineered wood products.

Responsibilities include preparing repair drawings, reviewing field conditions, and guiding projects from concept to completion while meeting code requirements and Fieldstone quality standards.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of wood truss systems and related engineered wood products.
• Familiar with IRC, IBC, ASCE 7, NDS for Wood Construction, and ANSI/TPI standards.
• Strong understanding of roof and floor loading, load paths, and wood connector design.
• Ability to read blueprints, architectural drawings, construction documents, and truss design drawings.
• 3+ years of experience in wood truss design and engineering software.
• Experience designing truss repairs is strongly preferred.

Synopsis

The Truss Repair Designer works in partnership with clients, Component Manufacturers, Architects, Engineers, and field personnel to develop clear and accurate repair designs for roof and floor trusses and related engineered wood products. Using photographs, field reports, truss design documents, and construction documents, this role evaluates field conditions and repair needs, prepares repair drawings and supporting calculations, and communicates technical requirements to clients and project partners. The Truss Repair Designer manages multiple repair projects while adhering to applicable building codes, design standards, client requirements, and Fieldstone quality standards.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Design repairs for residential and commercial roof and floor trusses and related engineered wood products based on photographs, field reports, truss design documents, and construction documents.
• Prepare clear and accurate truss repair drawings, details, and supporting calculations for field use and review.
• Review damaged, altered, or nonconforming truss conditions and develop appropriate repair solutions based on the available field and design information.
• Review construction documents and truss design drawings for accuracy, design requirements, and code compliance.
• Determine repair design requirements using structural principles including roof and floor loading, load paths, wood member design, and wood connector design.
• Calculate and evaluate tributary loads, concentrated loads, and load transfer as applicable to the repair condition.
• Use MiTek SE and other applicable truss engineering software to analyze truss conditions and develop repair designs.
• Communicate with clients to obtain missing information, clarify field conditions, answer technical questions, and communicate repair requirements.
• Communicate with the Architect or Engineer when technical clarification or engineering review is required.
• Manage multiple repair projects at one time, prioritize workload, and maintain project status in order to meet deadlines.
• Maintain job-related files utilizing Fieldstone file and folder structure processes and procedures.
• Consistently apply Fieldstone Quality Control procedures and take ownership of the accuracy and completeness of work.
• Maintain and comply with Fieldstone and client-specific standards, including CAD, file management, and documentation requirements.
• Foster a culture of external and internal client service.
• Other duties may be assigned.

Required Knowledge

• Knowledge of wood truss systems, truss products, metal plate connected trusses, connectors, and related engineered wood products.
• Working familiarity with building codes and design standards, including the International Residential Code (IRC), International Building Code (IBC), ASCE 7, National Design Specification (NDS) for Wood Construction, and ANSI/TPI standards.
• Solid understanding of structural principles including residential and commercial roof and floor loading, load paths, wood member design, and wood connector design.
• Strong mathematical abilities, including the ability to calculate tributary loads, concentrated loads, and load transfer throughout the building.
• Ability to read and review blueprints, architectural drawings, construction documents, truss design drawings, and field reports.
• Knowledge of residential and commercial construction as it relates to truss design and repair conditions.

Required Skills

• Ability to develop clear, practical truss repair solutions from photographs, field reports, truss design documents, and other available project information.
• Working knowledge of MiTek SE or similar metal plate connected truss engineering software.
• Ability to prepare clear repair drawings, details, calculations, and technical documentation.
• Familiarity with AutoCAD is preferred.
• Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills for repair drawings, calculations, and client correspondence.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to identify discrepancies or missing information that may affect a repair design.
• Ability to manage and successfully prioritize multiple projects at one time.
• Ability to work independently and complete assignments in a timely manner with minimal supervision.
• Ability to communicate effectively with clients and project partners regarding technical and field-related repair questions.
• Consistent ability to successfully meet deadlines.

Required Experience

• 3+ years of experience in wood truss design and engineering software.
• Direct experience designing truss repairs is strongly preferred.
• A degree in civil or structural engineering is preferred but not required.
• Experienced truss designers with strong practical knowledge are encouraged to apply, as are designers with an engineering background who want to learn truss repair design.
• Computer-aided drafting experience preferred.
