Job summary

The Salvation Army A Georgia Corp in Vero Beach, FL is seeking a part-time Truck Helper / Store Helper to support donation pickups, stocking, and customer assistance. The role involves driving assistance, loading/unloading, and keeping the store and warehouse orderly while ensuring safety.

Hours are 8:00am to 6:30pm, Monday to Friday (29 hours weekly), with benefits. A valid state drivers license is required, and no formal education is required; six months of lifting experience preferred.

• Six months experience lifting and hauling heavy items such as appliances and furniture or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

• Rides in Salvation Army truck to pick up donated items and assists driver with navigation.
• Inspects donations for policy compliance and helps load/unload to maximize space and safety.
• Prepares donation receipts and maintains good donor relations.
• Assists customers in donating items and answers questions about pricing and purchasing.
• Maintains store displays, cleans racks and floors, and ensures a neat, inviting store environment.

Assists in picking-up donations by riding in a Salvation Army truck and lifting, carrying, and/or hauling donations into the truck and unloading the same at the warehouse; assists in navigating for the Truck Driver; ensures the accountability, security, and safety of the donations when in route; assists in maintaining the vehicle in proper working order and in compliance with established standards.

Assists customers in donating, locating and/or selecting store items; stocks and arranges store items in a neat and orderly manner; monitors the store displays and performs various cleaning activities to ensure the store is properly maintained.

Truck Helper Responsibilities

• Rides in a Salvation Army truck on a scheduled route in order to pick-up donated items; assists in navigating driver to destinations by reading a map and/or hand-written directions
• Inspects donated items briefly to ensure they can be used according to established policies and procedures; explains policy to customers regarding the types of items that can be accepted.
• Lifts, carries, and/or hauls donations into truck; packs items in truck in a manner that maximizes use of space, protects items from damage, and ensures safety
• Prepares donation receipts for customers; ensures the accuracy and completeness of the same.
• Maintains good relationship with donors to promote a favorable image of The Salvation Army.
• Unloads donations from truck upon arrival at warehouse; distributes items to appropriate locations in the warehouse.
• Loads truck of items to be taken to the dump.
• Delivers appliances and furniture purchased by customers.
• Performs routine maintenance of the truck; checks fluid levels on a regular basis; coordinates and may participate in repair work as needed.

Store Helper Responsibilities

• Assists customers by explaining store policy and responding to questions regarding the pricing and/or purchasing of items; ensures that all customers visiting the store have a pleasant experience.
• Assists customers who are donating items to The Salvation Army; directs customers to the proper loading/unloading area; may assist with hauling donations to the storage area; prepares and provides tax receipts as needed.
• Places and arranges items in the store as directed; checks all store displays to ensure that items are maintained and displayed in a neat and orderly manner; rotates and/or rearranges stock as directed; returns items to the proper location after customer's have handled.
• Answers the store telephone in a tactful and courteous manner; assists customers by responding to questions and providing directions and/or general information; may schedule and record donation pick-ups.
• Cleans all display racks and shelves; sweeps and mops floors; cleans windows and mirrors; ensures that the store is maintained in a clean and inviting manner.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Ability to meet attendance requirements.
• Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language.
• Ability to read and follow a map and/or hand-written directions.
• Ability to perform strenuous, heavy work involving the lifting and carrying of heavy objects.
• Ability to perform continuous walking, stooping, standing, and some climbing and ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
• Ability to remain and become certified for job specific certifications. licenses and trainings.
• Physical ability to lift and carry and/or push/pull heavy objects (less than 100lbs).

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR IN YOU: EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

No formal education required, and six months experience lifting and hauling heavy items such as appliances and furniture, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
