Job description

The City is seeking a dependable, safety-focused Truck Driver II to support the daily operations of the Public Works Department . This position plays an essential role in maintaining safe, reliable, and efficient public infrastructure and services throughout the City.

The Truck Driver II operates Class B trucks to haul construction and snow materials, plow and sand roadways during winter operations, and operate heavy equipment such as front-end loaders. Responsibilities also include conducting equipment inspections, operating vehicle-mounted equipment and related systems, and assisting with road maintenance and other departmental activities as needed.

Requirements

High School diploma or equivalent required. A valid State of Maine CDL Class A or Class B motor vehicle operator’s license is required. At least one (1) year of prior experience in heavy truck operation, snow plowing, and snow haul operations strongly preferred. Any equivalent combination of education, training or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. All employees in positions requiring a CDL must participate in the City’s drug and alcohol testing program as required by FMCSA rules.

Hours

Normal hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm; however, during the trial work schedule in effect from May 4, 2026 through October 2, 2026, the schedule may consist of either four 10-hour days or five 8-hour days, with workdays beginning at 6:30 am. Non-standard work hours and overtime are required during the winter months and at other times as necessary to support Public Works operations.

Compensation & Benefits

This non-exempt position is classified within Band 4 of the AFSCME Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) wage scale. The anticipated hiring range is $26.07 to $32.48 per hour. The actual rate of pay within this range will be determined based on factors such as experience, qualifications, and available budget. Employees are eligible for annual cost-of-living adjustments (COLA) as well as potential merit-based step increases.

Employees have a choice between two excellent health insurance plans. Depending on the plan selected, a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) is available to help offset deductible, or deductible and coinsurance, costs. Employees who are covered under a qualifying alternative health plan may be eligible for a medical buyout of up to $5,870 annually. Employees also receive an annual allowance of $527 to purchase and maintain work clothing, plus $400 annually to purchase safety footwear.

Retirement benefits include mandatory enrollment in the MainePERS Plan AC, a defined benefit pension plan. Please note that employees in this plan do not contribute to Social Security. Employees also earn paid vacation and sick leave, receive 13 paid holidays per year, and have access to Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) for medical and dependent care expenses. Additional benefits include life insurance, short-term disability coverage, an optional 457(b) deferred compensation plan, tuition reimbursement, and more.
