Job summary

The City of Buffalo is seeking a Truck Driver in Street Sanitation to operate various trucks, including packer-type and dump trucks, and perform routine maintenance and safety duties. You will follow work orders, assist in loading and unloading, and help maintain safety zones while serving in varied weather conditions.

Responsibilities include snow removal with plow/spreader, driving under general direction, and reporting equipment problems during daily routes. CDL with air-brakes is required.

Qualifications

• Operates a truck with a plow or spreader for snow removal and salt spreading.
• Performs minor maintenance on trucks.
• Checks oil and gas levels, tire inflation and cleanliness of the truck.
• Reports problems with equipment and documents them.
• Assists in loading/unloading of trucks.
• Assists in setting up and maintaining safety zones.
• Wears safety equipment as required.
• Maintains awareness of potential safety hazards while working.
• Performs related duties as required.

Job description

A Truck Driver in Street Sanitation operates one or more types of automotive equipment, including a packer-type truck and dump truck, other than heavy duty or specialized automotive equipment, in the performance of duties. Work consists of routine manual and simple mechanical operations of equipment. Incumbents are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the trucks and related equipment. S/he follows general directions, including work orders to determine work to be done and routes to be taken, from a superior who performs periodic inspections of work. Incumbents may be called upon to operate heavy duty equipment in case of emergency. Supervision may be exercised over Laborers in the loading and unloading of trucks.

• Operates a truck in connection with the collecting, removing and/or transporting of recycling garbage, refuse, gravel, trees, branches, dirt, etc.;
• Operates a truck with a plow or spreader in connection with removal of snow and spreading of salt to clear snow from streets with parked vehicles and other obstacles;
• Performs minor maintenance work on trucks;
• Checks oil and gas level, tire inflation and cleanliness of the truck;
• Reports problems with equipment and documents same;
• Assists in the loading and unloading of trucks;
• Assists in setting up and maintaining of safety zones;
• Wears safety equipment as required;
• Maintains awareness of potential safety hazards while working;
• Performs related duties as required.

(A) Continuous and permanent status in any city department as a Laborer in the competitive class for one year;

or

(B) Continuous and permanent status in any city department as a Laborer I, Laborer II, Housing Custodian, Street Repair Worker or Street Worker in the non-competitive class for two years.

Special Requirement

• Possession of a current Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License issued by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles, which must be presented at time of filing application and maintained during employment.
• Note: License must allow you to operate vehicles with air-brakes.
