Job Duties:

Serve as the TRIO SSS Academic Advisor to a caseload ofapproximately 100-110 students who are members of the UW OshkoshTRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program. The TRIO SSS programserves 300 UW Oshkosh students annually. SSS students arefirst-generation college (parents have not earned a baccalaureatedegree) students and/or students whose family income meetsfederally established guidelines. Students with a documenteddisability may also be served in the program. The goal of SSS is toincrease the college persistence and graduation rates of thestudents it serves. SSS is one of the U.S. Department of Educationfunded TRIO programs.

During the academic year, evening hours on a weekly basis may berequired. Evening hours in the summer and weekend hours during boththe academic year and summer on an occasional basis arerequired.

65% Provide support for an assigned caseload of studentparticipants in the areas of academic advising, life skillsdevelopment, student success development, career planning,financial literacy, and financial aid and scholarship assistance.Encourage students to participate fully in the college experienceincluding study abroad, internship opportunities and considerationof graduate school.

  • 1. Assist in the recruitment of eligible students and thecompletion of an intake process to include: an Interest Form, aNeeds Sheet, and a First-Year Student Services Form.
  • 2. Responsible for assessing a student participants’ needs byhaving students complete our program’s needs survey and developingan individualized student success plan at the beginning of astudent participants enrollment into the program.
  • 3. Responsible for the advisement of a caseload of about 100-110student participants in assisting with academic planning, courseselection, and navigating institutional and academicpolicies.
  • 4. Facilitating semesterly advising meetings to help students seteducational goals, monitor their progress, and provide resourcesfor academic success.
  • 5. Responsible for supporting student advisees who are on academicprobation and/or suspension in creating an academic success planwith the goal of meeting the program’s retention, persistence, andgraduation objectives.
  • 6. Identify and make appropriate referrals to the Success Coach forat-risk students that might need additional support.
  • 7. Monitor student progress employing developmental, proactive, andappreciative academic advising methods and document studentadvising meetings and interactions in Navigate and PeopleSoft incompliance of FERPA regulations.
  • 8. Monitor and track student semester enrollment status, grades,grade-point averages, and progress towards graduation.
  • 9. Provide monthly student progress reports to include academicissues and concerns (re-enrollment concerns, financial challengesand barriers; students dropping out, transferring out, or are atrisk of being on academic probation and/or suspended).
  • 10. Serves as a main point of contact for students and offersinformation about educational opportunities and academicrequirements. Refer SSS students to other service providers oncampus such as the Center for Academic Resources, Financial Aid,Registrar, Student Accounts, Counseling Center, Reading/StudyCenter, Disability Services, Project Success, etc.
  • 11. Maintain accurate and detailed records of student contact. Keepstudent files up to date in accordance with federal andinstitutional regulations.

15% Assist in the development and implementation of projectservices under the direction of the program director and incollaboration with the other Student Support Services staffmembers.

  • 1. Keep current with trends and knowledge in the fields of studentsuccess programs.
  • 2. Employ best practices and success strategies in the design,implementation, and assessment of the SSS/SSS STEM programcomponents.
  • 3. In collaboration with SSS/SSS STEM First-Year ExperienceCoordinator, support the efforts of the SSS/SSS STEM First-Year Experience curriculum for first-year students. Advisors areresponsible for discussing the importance of the TRIO SSSFirst-Year Experience program and addressing any attendance issuesor concerns brought up by the FYE Coordinator and/or FYE studentleaders.
  • 4. In collaboration with the Success Coach, Advisors are expectedto actively participate and engage in TRIO SSS workshops and eventsoffered to program student participants. Advisors are responsiblefor encouraging all student advisees to actively participate inthese workshops and events throughout the academic year, especiallythe End of Year Celebration event.
  • 5. Provide support and guidance to student employees serving asFirst-Year Experience Student Leaders, Communication Intern, and/orStudent Ambassadors.

10% Participate in New Student Orientations to assist with therecruitment of eligible students into the program and obtaindocumentation to verify program eligibility. Advocate forfirst-generation and limited-income students. Support theuniversity's enrollment goals and assist with orientation byadvising first-year students who may be eligible to participate inour TRIO SSS program.

5% Communicate and collaborate with the campus community. Serveon campus committees and participate in campus events andactivities.

5% Perform other duties as assigned by the SSS/SSS STEMdirector.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Participates in the campus-wide advising community providinginput to leadership regarding the development of advising,recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by theschool/college
  • Proactively engages students as needed
  • Maintains expertise with advised curriculum and may assist indeveloping and recommending exceptions for policy andcurriculum
  • Implements academic advising events such as workshops, paneldiscussions, and guest speakers
  • Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records andprocesses and responds to academic inquiriesaccording to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and PrivacyAct (FERPA) policies
  • Serves as a main point of contact for students and providesinformation about educational options and academic requirements;assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, andvalues to match appropriate field of study/career options, andrefers students to appropriate institutional resources
  • Receives, processes, and responds to academic inquiriesaccording to established policies and procedures

Starting at $45,000 commensurate with experience

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum Degree Required: Bachelor's degree
  • Professional Experience working with educational programs
  • Demonstrated exceptional interpersonal, written and oralcommunication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively withstudents, faculty, and staff.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in counseling, higher education, or a relatedfield.
  • Experience providing advising or counseling services in aprofessional capacity.
  • Experience supporting the needs of first-generation, incomeeligible students.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and/or experience with StudentSupport Services (SSS) and/or other TRIO programs.
