Job description

At HDR, the Trenchless Geotechnical Team Lead will report to the Trenchless Services Engineering Lead and will be responsible for planning, managing, and orchestrating geologic and geotechnical initiatives associated with trenchless technologies: engineering, design, and construction.

Primary Responsibilities

The Team Lead will contribute to the Trenchless Program by applying geologic information to engineering and design, leading and coordinating geotechnical exploration campaigns, evaluating subsurface conditions for construction feasibility, and recommending solutions to problematic geologic conditions. The Leader will interface with the broader team to integrate geotechnical data into project deliverables.

Expected day-to-day tasks include:
  • Lead and execute comprehensive geotechnical investigations for trenchless projects, including fieldwork, supervising drilling crews, performing soil and rock logging, collecting data, coordinating laboratory programs, analyzing data, and generating reports.
  • Generate geotechnical and engineering reports.
  • Serve as a local resource to HDR’s Area of Operations and represent the Trenchless Services team at client meetings.
  • Manage geotechnical data using OpenGround and/or gINT software, including creating deliverables such as boring logs and cross sections.
  • Perform quality control of geological data and analyze subsurface parameters for models such as hydraulic fracture and inadvertent returns analyses (HFIAs).
  • Interpret subsurface conditions and incorporate geological data into design and construction decisions.
  • Advise on software capabilities for trenchless deliverables, including gINT, OpenGround, ArcGIS Pro, and AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Support other business groups within HDR as trenchless services are commodity neutral.
  • Support trenchless engineering, design, and field services across all regions and business groups.
  • Travel as necessary for field work, including site reconnaissance, logging, and construction oversight.
  • Lead and manage teams of geologists, specialists, or engineers, performing workload forecasting, scheduling, risk management, and mentoring.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with OpenGround software.
  • Experience working and communicating successfully in remote environments.
  • Experience leading and managing direct reports.
  • Experience managing subconsultants.
  • Four-year degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geology, or a related field.
  • Team oriented with strong desire to lead geotechnical initiatives.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, gINT, ArcGIS, AutoDesk.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Travel required.
  • PE and/or PG credentials.
  • Knowledge of ASTM Standards for geotechnical concepts and subsurface classification.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience.
  • Professional registration, license, or certification may be required.
  • Strong communication and listening skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments.
  • Good leadership and organizational skills.
