Job summary

HDR is seeking a Trenchless Geotechnical Team Lead to plan, manage, and execute geotechnical initiatives across trenchless projects, coordinating engineering, design, and construction activities.

You will lead investigations, generate reports, mentor staff, manage resources and costs, and grow HDR's capabilities with OpenGround, gINT, ArcGIS Pro, and AutoCAD Civil 3D. This full-time role is based in the United States with opportunities across HDR locations and travel.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum of 7 years of geotechnical or related engineering experience.
  • Professional registration, license, or certification may be required based on role.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
  • Experience with OpenGround, gINT, ArcGIS Pro, and AutoCAD Civil 3D.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and execute geotechnical investigations for trenchless projects, including fieldwork, subcontracted drilling crews, soil/rock logging, and laboratory coordination.
  • Generate geotechnical and engineering reports, including boring logs, cross-sections, and design reports.
  • Represent HDR’s Trenchless Services team at client meetings and coordinate with the broader team on integrating geotechnical data into project deliverables.
  • Maintain data management and quality control of geological data using OpenGround and/or gINT, and produce deliverables with these software tools.
  • Assist in geotechnical analyses, calculate parameters for models (e.g., hydraulic fracture) and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Incorporate geological and geotechnical data into critical design determinations, create cross-sections, and support design teams.
  • Advance capabilities in OpenGround, gINT, ArcGIS Pro, and AutoCAD Civil 3D to generate trenchless deliverables.
  • Support HDR’s other business groups including transportation, water, federal, and resources projects.
  • Travel as necessary for site reconnaissance, field logging, and construction oversight.
  • Manage workload, delegate tasks, and lead a team of geotechnical professionals, including mentoring and performance reviews.
  • Plan resources, forecast costs, schedule activities, and manage risk for all geological and geotechnical initiatives.

Job description

HDR is seeking a Trenchless Geotechnical Team Lead to report to the Trenchless Services Engineering Lead. The role focuses on planning, managing, and orchestrating geologic and geotechnical initiatives associated with trenchless technologies across engineering, design, and construction applications.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Lead and execute comprehensive geotechnical investigations for various trenchless projects, including fieldwork, subcontracted drilling crews, soil and rock logging, and laboratory coordination.
  • Generate geotechnical and engineering reports, including boring logs, cross‑sections, and design reports.
  • Represent HDR’s Trenchless Services team at client meetings and coordinate with the broader team on integrating geotechnical data into project deliverables.
  • Maintain data management and quality control of geological data using OpenGround and/or gINT, and produce deliverables with these software tools.
  • Assist in geotechnical analyses of subsurface conditions, calculate parameters for models such as hydraulic fracture and inadvertent returns, and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Incorporate geological and geotechnical data into critical design determinations, create cross‑sections, and support design teams.
  • Advance capabilities in software programs (gINT, OpenGround, ArcGIS Pro, AutoCAD Civil 3D) to generate trenchless deliverables.
  • Support other business groups within HDR, including transportation, water, federal, and resources projects.
  • Travel as necessary for site reconnaissance, field logging, and construction oversight.
  • Manage workload, delegate tasks, and lead a team of geotechnical professionals, including mentoring, performance reviews, and training.
  • Plan resources, forecast costs, schedule activities, and manage risk for all geological and geotechnical initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with OpenGround software.
  • Proven ability to work and communicate effectively in remote environments.
  • Leadership experience managing direct reports and subconsultants.
  • Four‑year degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geology, or related field.
  • Strong interpersonal, customer‑service, and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, gINT, ArcGIS, and AutoDesk.
  • Willingness to travel.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) and/or Post‑Graduate (PG) credentials.
  • Knowledge of ASTM Standards for geotechnical concepts and material classification.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in geotechnical or related engineering disciplines.
  • Professional registration, license, or certification may be required based on role.
  • Strong communication and listening skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously.
