Position Title

Position Description

Working with the Tree Warden, provides continuing maintenance and care to approximately 1200 trees of numerous and various species on the College campus and nearby areas.

Responsibilities
  • On a continuing basis, survey College trees for evidence of defoliation, disease, pests, fungus, broken branches, etc.; treat diseased areas; remove pests or treat for pest removal; collect samples for analysis; apply appropriate treatment on receipt of report.
  • Perform tree surgery and pruning as required; recommend removal of trees as appropriate.
  • Assist in maintaining a three‑year schedule for maintenance of College elms; examine stands; identify trees most in need; plan for specific work including trimming, surgery, disease prevention, feeding, fertilization, pest treatment; execute activities and set up supporting mechanical/hydraulic systems.
  • Assist with bi‑annual tree fertilization program: designate trees, take measurements, calculate fertilizer amounts, apply fertilizer (granular or liquid), set up pumps, hoses, flow controls; aerate trees when needed.
  • Assist with tree pruning and removal work; work with contractor when necessary; prepare worksite.
  • Operate cherry picker to do tree trimming; exercise safe working practices.
  • Remove snow and ice from sidewalks, patios, etc.
Qualifications
  • High school graduate with formal training in Tree Management.
  • Five years of relevant experience or high school plus 5+ years experience.
  • State license to apply pesticides required.
  • Class B CDL License; qualified under Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.
  • Ability to pass a yearly hearing test.
  • NH Pesticide license with G1 (Shade and ornamental pest control) and B (Right‑of‑way and commercial weed and brush control).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of a variety of trees, diseases, fungi, insect pests, and treatments.
  • Knowledge of tree planting, pruning, fertilization practices.
  • Ability to climb trees.
  • Ability to oversee contractors.
  • Knowledgeable in safe handling of pesticides.
  • Skill working in and around aerial lifts, ropes, saddles, harnesses.
  • Skill in using and maintaining chain saws and other tools.
  • Ability to lift and handle tree debris.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Willingness to work overtime when required.
Working Conditions
  • Requires bending, kneeling, climbing, cramped or awkward positions.
  • Regular lifting, carrying, and holding objects up to 80 pounds.
  • Performed indoors or outdoors, in bad weather, noisy, dirty, or smoky areas.
  • Exposure to hazards from electric shock, burns, cuts, chemical fumes.
  • Wearing protective clothing: aprons, overalls, gloves, goggles, masks, hearing protection.
  • Performed in a cherry picker at heights up to 70 feet.
