Cafeteria Manager, Travel [Starts at $22.50/hr plus benefits]

Starting Date: Immediately

Location: District-wide, Omaha Public Schools, Nebraska

Schedule: Minimum 6.0 scheduled hours per day (typically 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) from August through May. Managers must be available from 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. when other schools need coverage.

Reports To: Executive Director, Nutrition Services

Position Purpose: Manage all facets of food production, daily accounts and deposits, food orders, payroll, supervision of meal preparation and service, sanitation of equipment, stock rotation, dishwashing, and customer service for students and staff.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Excellent attendance and work record.
  • One or more years of job-related experience or training in food services.
  • Basic arithmetic calculations in U.S. currency, weight, volume, and distance.
  • Safe food handling and food safety practices.
  • Knowledge of all facets of food production and equipment operation.
  • Customer relations, service recovery, and communication skills.
  • Organizational skills and ability to handle multiple projects.
  • Leadership/management skills; problem‑solving and decision‑making.
  • Provide consistent feedback and assign tasks to meet schedule.
  • Use of computer programs for reporting and inventory.
  • Understanding of OPS mission, purpose, and goals.
  • Assist with cleaning, sanitizing kitchen equipment and areas.
  • Willingness to travel to other schools.
Essential Performance Responsibilities
  • Maintain attendance and attend manager meetings.
  • Make complex plans, schedules, and decisions independently.
  • Assist with preparation, service, and storage of food.
  • Complete required reports.
  • Work with a diverse student population and serve as a positive role model.
  • Identify and recognize reimbursable meals.
  • Support service initiatives and follow menu protocols.
  • Communicate with satellite school cafeteria managers and coordinate production practices.
  • Provide input during staff performance appraisals and train staff as needed.
  • Promote customer service with appealing food.
  • Monitor portion control, pricing, and safe storage of supplies and food.
  • Follow food safety, cleaning, sanitation, and HACCP procedures.
  • Maintain personal hygiene and direct sanitation procedures.
  • Use basic math skills and count money accurately.
  • Operate food service equipment safely and follow written instructions.
  • Complete required certifications: Douglas County Food Handler’s, Kitchen Assistant, Cook I, Production, and Manager Training.
Additional Duties

Perform other related tasks assigned by supervisor or central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment

Use computer and automated record‑keeping software; operate commercial kitchen equipment (ovens, steamers, hot‑holding cabinets, blenders, mixers, slicers, can and peel openers, knives, scales, thermometers). Comply with OPS equipment guidelines.

Travel

Local travel to other schools required.

  • Lift, move, or reposition objects up to 50 lbs frequently.

  • Work under direct supervision of the department supervisor.

  • Provide quick, responsive customer service.
Employee Punctuality and Appearance
  • Work all scheduled hours unless approved leave is received.
  • Prior approval required for any deviation from assigned hours.
  • Report dressed in a manner reflecting a positive image of Omaha Public Schools.
Terms of Employment

Classified full‑time non‑exempt position governed by Nebraska state laws and Board of Education policies. Employment may also be governed by a negotiated collective bargaining agreement if represented.
