Job summary

The Tri-M Group, LLC is seeking a Testing Tech 1 to perform advanced electrical power equipment tests and field service tasks under EnerG Test Manager. You will handle test sets, interpret results, and ensure safety and compliance on site across multiple projects.

You will travel regionally or nationally, work with minimal supervision, and contribute to repair, refurbishment, and upgrades as needed for client sites.

Qualifications

  • Must have high school diploma or equivalent and post-secondary training in electrical work.
  • NETA Level 2 certification or equivalent experience; Level 3 within 3–5 years.
  • Completion of approved electrical apprenticeship and journeyperson license.
  • Basic fall protection, confined space, LO/TO training required.
  • Minimum four years’ experience in electrical power equipment installation/testing.

Responsibilities

  • Follow safety policies, procedures, and Tri‑M/ENERG standards.
  • Read and interpret electrical distribution drawings and schematics.
  • Operate testing equipment (hipot, power factor, TTR, CT, relay testers).
  • Perform initial interpretation of test results and escalate for final evaluation.
  • Travel regionally or nationally to job sites; support on‑call/emergency response.

Summary Description

Under the direction of the EnerG Test Manager/Operations Manager this person will perform various advanced tests of electrical power equipment and perform various service tasks to the same equipment.

Position Requirements
  • Travel Expectations: Up to 75% or more, with the ability to spend extended periods away from home. May include extensive overnight field assignments representing employer partners in customer‑facing environments.
  • Flexibility: Must be willing to work varying hours, including weekends, and respond to short‑notice travel assignments.
  • Work Location: Nationwide, dependent upon the customer and project.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential
  • Complies with and ensures compliance with all Tri‑M safety policies and procedures.
  • Complies with and ensures compliance with all Tri‑M employment policies and procedures including standards of conduct and appearance to reflect positively on the Company.
  • Adheres to testing and service protocols, including Tri‑M procedures, forms, and check sheets, as well as customer requirements, ANSI/IEEE, NETA procedures and OEM requirements.
  • Understands and follows proper safety and temporary grounding procedures.
  • Reads and interprets electrical distribution system drawings, including single lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, section and plans views.
  • Operates hipot, power factor, TTR, CT, primary and secondary injection, relay test equipment and all test sets required at the Testing Tech 1 level.
  • Performs initial interpretation of all test results, and consults with the testing foreperson and/or supervisor and/or manager for final evaluation.
  • Performs service tasks related to electrical power equipment, including repair, replacement, refurbishment, and upgrade.
  • Troubleshoots electrical power equipment problems and performance issues using appropriate techniques and equipment.
  • Able to plan out a job without being told what to do and lead assigned projects.
  • Ensures compliance with the National Electric Code (NEC) and National Electric Safety Code (NESC) High voltage Electrical safety.
  • Ensures that quality and productivity meet Company and customer standards.
  • Travels regionally or nationally to job sites as needed.
  • Serves as part of an on‑call system and emergency response crew.
  • Safeguards and maintains Tri‑M equipment and tools.
  • Completes all testing and service forms and check sheets including preparing reports for review by supervisor.
  • Capable of operating independently.
  • Understands electrical distribution system drawings, including single lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, section and plan views.
  • Assists Substation Technicians as directed by Operations Manager when required.
  • Assist line crew as needed.
  • Keeps current with new techniques and developments in the service and testing of electrical power equipment.
  • Recommends improved methods of operation.
  • Requisitions materials and supplies; schedules heavy vehicles when necessary.
Job Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent or post‑secondary technical training.
  • NETA Level 2 certified or capable of certification proven by years of experience. Obtain NETA Level 3 certification within 3‑5 years.
  • Completion of an approved electrical apprenticeship and hold a current journeyperson license.
  • Completion of basic training in fall protection, confined space, LO/TO classes.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience in the construction field and/or installation of electrical power equipment or related technical field.
  • Above average understanding of construction standards and procedures for primary and secondary installations and has a demonstrated proficiency.
  • Successfully demonstrated knowledge and skills required for Testing Tech 2 position.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform absence of voltage testing over 1000V, protective ground installation and removal, basic troubleshooting and wiring diagram interpretation (normal operating conditions), manage field testing and interface with customer for basic tests and situations.
  • Current First Aid and CPR cards.
  • Valid driver’s license and DOT physical. Maintain a valid driver’s license and ability to meet driving eligibility requirements as outlined in Tri‑M/EnerG Test Policies.
  • Willingness to be trained and educated on testing and service techniques, protocols, equipment and technical issues.
  • Basic working knowledge of the National Electric Code (NEC), National Electric Safety Code (NESC), ANSI/IEEE standards, and NETA requirements.
  • Confident, decisive, safety oriented, and self‑motivated.
  • Awareness of the latest trade publications and technical papers.
  • Ability to travel to jobsites, including overnight stays and weekends, as required.
  • Ability and willingness to work extended hours, including evenings and weekends, based on project demands and schedules.
Physical Requirements
  • Working 40 hours/week, scheduled in 8 to 10‑hour shifts.
  • Standing and climbing 4 to 6 hours/day.
  • Kneeling, lifting, reaching above shoulders, and bending 4 to 5 hours/day.
  • Twisting (180°) and walking 2 to 3 hours/day.
  • Squatting and sitting 1 to 2 hours/day.
  • Lifting weights of 0 to 75 lbs. at the following frequencies: continuous lifting of 10 to 35 lbs.; frequent lifting of 35 to 50 lbs.; occasional lifting of 50 to 75 lbs.; sizes & shapes of objects vary from concrete blocks to cylinders to 10’ lengths of metallic conduit and 20' lengths of PVC conduit; average carry requirements, 60 lbs. for 40'.
  • Ability to lift from floor to above shoulder.
  • Repetitive use of hands includes: continuous grasping up to 50 lbs.; frequent pushing and pulling of 50 to 75 lbs.; and fine motor coordination for equipment adjustments and test set use.
  • Repetitive use of feet is required for operating heavy equipment, conduit benders and vertical climbing.
  • Vision adequate for blueprint reading and color coding for wire identification.
  • Balance adequate for continuous climbing of ladders, scaffolds, and lifts.
  • Environmental factors include working in: temperature extremes of 0° F to 100° F; up to 8 hours inside or outside; atmospheric exposure to dust, gases, fumes, and odors within the Permissible Exposure Limits (PEL). Special hazards include exposure to mechanical, electrical, chemical, and potentially explosive hazards.
  • Personal protective equipment includes use of hard hat, safety glasses, protected‑toe boots, and appropriate gloves for the task. Equipment on an "as needed" basis may include fall protection, dust mask, respirator, hearing protection, arc flash protective gear, and dielectrically insulated gloves and/or sleeves.
