Job summary

Amentum is seeking a Traveling Aircraft Mechanic II (Sheet Metal) to perform the full range of aircraft maintenance with primary responsibility for sheet metal and structural repair. This role manufactures and fabricates sheet metal parts and assemblies from various serviced aircraft, handling curved and irregular edges, panels, doors, and related components.

Candidates must hold an FAA Airframe & Powerplant license or have equivalent experience, and be willing to travel up to 75% of the time.

Qualifications

• Valid FAA Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) License or equivalent experience.
• 3+ years aviation maintenance experience; 2+ years on rotary wing aircraft; 2+ years on MDS aircraft.
• Ability to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization; US Citizenship required for credentials.

Job description

The Traveling Aircraft Mechanic II (Sheet Metal) performs the full range of aircraft maintenance with primary responsibility for sheet metal and structural repair. Manufactures and fabricates aircraft sheet metal parts, panels, doors, etc., from various serviced aircraft. Such aircraft articles have numerous combined straight and curved edges or irregular curves and planes such as fuselage, door assemblies, windshield panel angles, washers, firewalls and straight brackets. Such sheet metal stock/parts/items consist of various types of metal, e.g., steel stainless steel, aluminum, corrugated aluminum, titanium, iron, brass, copper, magnesium, rubber, plastic, plexiglass, fiberglass, etc. Determines type and extent of repair or replacement required, type of material and repair methods to use. Lays out, cuts forms, joins, assembles and installs items. Read and analyzes work request and applicable specifications or similar work data. Develops parts and templates from prints, drawings, or original parts to produce repair parts that are not readily available. To accomplish the development of these parts or templates plans, layouts, cuts, forms, shapes and assembles complex sheet metal items. Also, may use developed patterns/layouts, prefabricated templates or old part as a sample, scribes outline on sheet metal and cuts out scribed part using shears, Do-All saw and turret punch. Forms metal using cornice brake, punch press, drill press, and similar metal forming tools. Finish and smooth edges of metal sheet after cutting and assembles component sheet metal piece with rivets, screws, nuts and bolts. Aligns, drills and reams material for installation of various types of riveting and taking precautions to protect dissimilar metals. Applies necessary protective compounds, special insulating protective tape, plastic cement, fiberglass resins, etc. Independently lays out template, transcribes information from template and manufactures double contour parts with configuration in several planes. Assembles and fastens fabricated parts by installing bolts, rivets, screws and/or seaming. Develop and draw working sketches showing view, section, or profile. Ensures finished aircraft parts meet quality standards for soundness, strength, appearance in accordance with specification and/or similar requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

• Valid FAA Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) License, two (2) years aviation maintenance experience, three (3) years rotary wing aircraft experience, two (2) years' experience on assigned Mission Design Series (MDS) aircraft. All experience must be within the five (5) most recent years.
• If no A&P License, shall have three (3) years aviation maintenance experience, three (3) years rotary wing aircraft experience and two (2) years on assigned MDS aircraft. All experience must be within the five (5) most recent years.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work site.
• Tools are required ; must provide own tool and toolbox. All tools must be shadowed and etched with PID.
• Travel Team- Must be available to Travel up to 75% of the time, as operationally required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Thorough knowledge of aircraft sheet metal and structural repair and modification.
• Thorough knowledge of aircraft mechanical component troubleshooting, repair procedures, and replacement of parts.
• Basic knowledge of electrical theory and a thorough knowledge of aircraft tools including test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, sheet metal brakes, and shears.
• Working knowledge of aircraft logbooks, military technical publications, and maintenance data systems.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and technical manuals.
• Ability to lead small teams and prioritize workload to meet mission requirements.

Physical Requirements / Work Environment

• Must be able to walk and stand on level and/or inclined surfaces for extended periods throughout the day.
• Must be able to climb stairs, ramps, ladders, and work stands.
• Must be able to climb, stand, stoop, bend, stretch, crouch, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
• Must be able to type using a standard keyboard to communicate through e-mail and various software applications.
• Will be required to wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• May be required to operate power vehicles, machinery, hand tools, ground support equipment, forklift, etc.
• Must be able to lift/push/pull minimum of 50 pounds.
• May work in maintenance shop or outside and may be expected to work in all-weather conditions.
• May be exposed to extreme noise from operating equipment or electrical shock hazards or work near moving mechanical parts or vehicles.
