Job summary

American Traveler is seeking an experienced travel nurse RN in the Emergency Department for a travel assignment in Kansas City, KS. The 13-week contract includes 36 hours per week with 12-hour night shifts (1900–0700).

The role focuses on high-risk psychiatric patients and requires KS or Compact RN license plus BLS; ER and psychiatric nursing background is preferred. Benefits and travel/licensure reimbursement are included.

Qualifications

• Active KS or Compact RN license required.
• Current BLS certification required.
• Minimum 1 year ER experience and 1 year of psychiatric nursing experience in a hospital setting preferred.
• Experience with psychiatric patient assessments and determining appropriate dispositions is required.
• Proven ability to manage violent or escalated psychiatric patients.

Responsibilities

• Care for high-risk psychiatric patients in the ED.
• Work 12-hour night shifts from 1900 to 0700, three times per week.
• No floating or on-call requirements.
• May occasionally be asked to work 1-2 weekends per month.
• Holiday coverage required based on unit needs.
• Provide direct care to two high-risk psychiatric patients at a time, including medication administration, restraint use, de-escalation, and coordinating placement.
• Perform psychiatric evaluations for all psych patients entering the ED and coordinate necessary placement or interventions.
• Respond to Behavioral Response Team calls across the hospital, supporting bedside staff alongside police and nurse managers.
• Position is highly independent and requires strong psychiatric nursing skills for assessment and disposition planning.
• Facility is nicotine free.
• New graduates are not eligible for this position.
