Job summary

Advocate Condell Medical Center is seeking a Trauma Coordinator (Trauma Specialist) for a full-time, 40-hour week with Monday through Friday day hours. Major Responsibilities
  • Collaborates with, and integrates the services of, hospital medical staff, administration, department heads, ancillary services, nursing personnel, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) agencies, community hospitals and law enforcement agencies to coordinate all aspects of trauma care.
  • Monitors the care of patients admitted through Trauma Services. Utilizes specialized nursing knowledge and skills to assist with the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of trauma patient care throughout the hospital (ED, OR, ICU, PACU, Medical/Surgical floor). Performs rounds on current Trauma inpatients to track quality of care.
  • Assists with the care of the trauma patient in the Emergency Department as needed (assist with emergency procedures, transport trauma patient to ancillary departments for procedures, assist with admission bed placement, assist with patient identification). Acts as a liaison with patient's family.
  • Participates in trauma performance improvement activities through the development of performance improvement plans, projects and/or critical pathways.
  • Serves as a resource to nursing staff, trauma registry staff, utilization review, ancillary staff and pre-hospital staff for issues related to trauma care. Assists the manager with assessing nursing education needs; develops and implements inservices related to trauma patient care.
  • Coordinates the Trauma Prevention program and related projects. Develops, implements and evaluates community outreach programs. Creates and coordinates community outreach and prevention programs for targeted populations (i.e., car seat check ups, prevention activities, lectures, fairs).
  • Provide technical assistance to schools, communities and other outreach areas. Submits grant proposals; implements and monitors grant funded programs for compliance with requirements, including reporting and evaluation.
  • Assists the Trauma Registrar with abstracting data from patient charts on trauma patients.
  • Provides input in to budget for the trauma program; monitors budgeted expenses.
  • Assists with development of trauma practice management guidelines, policies and protocols related to trauma care. Assists with the preparation for reviews by the American College of Surgeons and other regulatory agencies.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.
Licensure, Registration, And/or Certification Required
  • Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which the team member practices, and
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required, and
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification (ACLS) issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required, and
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required, and
  • Emergency Nurse (CEN) certification issued by the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN), or
  • Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) certification issued by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), or
  • Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN) certification issued by the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN).
Education Required
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
Experience Required
  • Typically requires 3 years of experience in nursing in one of the following areas: pre-hospital nursing, emergency, critical care or trauma care.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
  • Knowledge of state of Wisconsin Trauma Plan (if applicable) and American College of Surgeons (ASC) Trauma Center criteria.
  • Previous experience in education program development.
Physical Requirements And Working Conditions
  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, reach above shoulders, and twist frequently throughout the workday.
  • Position requires use of foot pedals on carts or machines.
  • Must be able to:
  • lift up to 50 lbs from floor to waist.
  • lift up to 20 lbs over the head.
  • carry up to 40 lbs a reasonable distance.
  • Must be able to:
  • push/pull with 30 lbs of force.
  • perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs with a second person present.
  • Must have functional vision, speech, and hearing.
