State-of-West-Virgini is seeking a Transportation Worker 3 Equipment Operator to support District 2 counties. The role involves operating heavy highway maintenance equipment, performing major and minor repairs, and assisting drilling operations.

A CDL is required and the position offers progression through a DOL apprenticeship program; weekend/irregular hours may be required. The incumbent will work under general supervision and report to the District Heavy Maintenance Office.

Qualifications

  • Valid Class A or B CDL required.
  • Four years of full-time or equivalent experience operating heavy equipment (bulldozers, end loaders, dump trucks, drillers, etc.).
  • Substitutions: vocational program may substitute for two years of experience.

Responsibilities

  • Operate skid steer, utility tractor, aerial bucket truck, front-end loader, tandem-axle truck, and snowplow.
  • Perform major repairs to highways, culverts, and bridge structures; field repairs (tires, blades, filters).
  • Maintain equipment through cleaning, lubrication and checking fluid levels.
  • Flag and set traffic control signs and barricades on projects.
  • Shovel materials, clean culverts, mow, and brush cut as required.
  • Lead or train lower-level equipment operators; assist drilling rig operations.

Job description

**Disclaimer-this position will be considered classified-exempt and “at will.”**

The Transportation Worker 3 Equipment Operator will report to the District Heavy Maintenance Office and serve all of District 2 which includes Cabell, Lincoln, Logan, Mingo, and Wayne counties. This position, under general supervision, performs full-performance level skilled work in the construction and maintenance of highways. Operates motorized highway maintenance equipment such as skid steer, utility tractor, aerial bucket truck, front-end loader, tandem-axle truck, and snowplow. Makes major repairs to highways, culverts, and bridge structures. Makes minor mechanical repairs in the field, such as changing tires, blades, or filters. Responsible for maintaining equipment maintenance including but not limited to cleaning and lubricating equipment and checking fluid levels. May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. Performs related work as required, including flagging, erecting traffic control signs and barricades on construction and maintenance projects, shoveling materials, cleaning culverts, mowing, and brush cutting. Performs other related duties as required.

  • The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice.
  • In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License is required.
  • Tier 1 hourly rate: $23.5738

Not eligible for Tier 4.

  • Operates a hydraulic crane.
  • Utilizes heavy motorized equipment to excavate, backfill, grade, or level soil and aggregate.
  • Utilizes heavy motorized equipment to grade surfaces, roll or compact soil and aggregate.
  • Leads or trains lower-level equipment operators.
  • Assists the Core Driller in positioning the drilling rig.
  • Adds rods or augers to drill.
  • Removes core samples from the core barrel.
  • Assists in cleaning and maintenance of the drilling rig and related tools and equipment.
  • Installs steel piling in pre-drilled holes.
  • Cleans the drilling site of debris after drilling is completed.
  • Sets and detonates explosive charges for earth removal.
  • Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.
  • In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver License(CDL) is required.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Knowledge of safety practices used in structural steel construction.
  • Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures in the area ofassignment.
  • Knowledge of basic blueprint reading.
  • Knowledge of general construction and maintenance practices.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of gasoline and diesel-powered engines and their components.
  • Knowledge of the operation of motor-driven equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repairs.
  • Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
  • Ability to read operation manuals, blueprints, and specifications in the area of assignment.
  • Ability to operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment.
  • Ability to perform skilled trades work in bridge construction and maintenance.
  • Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records of daily maintenance activities and of gauges and meters used in heating, ventilation, and cooling systems.
  • Ability to climb high steel structures.
  • Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers.

TRAINING/EDUCATION: No formal education required.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Valid Class A or B CDL and four (4) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience operating heavy equipment such as bulldozers, end loaders, dump trucks, drillers, etc.
  • Substitutions: Successful completion of an approved vocational school program may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience in the specified area of assignment.
