Job summary

Volkert Inc. seeks an experienced Transportation Project Engineer for our Gulf Region, spanning Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee. The role requires 4+ years in roadway design or traffic engineering and a PE license, with leadership responsibilities and collaboration across teams.

You will design transportation projects, analyze operations, prepare plans and reports, and coordinate with clients and subconsultants while maintaining schedules and budgets. Travel may be required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering; ABET-accredited program (MS a plus).
• 4-10+ years of roadway design, traffic engineering, or transportation planning experience.
• PE license required.
• Experience with DOT design methods, plan preparation, standards, and specifications.
• Familiarity with MUTCD and AASHTO guidelines.
• Proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
• Self-motivated, dependable, able to work independently and in a team.
• Ability to travel and occasional overnight stays.

Responsibilities

• Lead or assist in transportation project design including roadway geometry, drainage, signals, signing, pavement marking, ITS, and maintenance of traffic plans.
• Conduct traffic operations analyses and prepare traffic impact, safety, corridor, and long-range planning studies.
• Prepare construction plans, specifications, quantities, cost estimates, reports, and memoranda.
• Perform engineering calculations following DOT standards and best practices.
• Direct engineers, designers, and interns, coordinating with subconsultants to deliver on schedule and budget.
• Participate in client meetings, business development, and team initiatives.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

We are currently searching for an experienced Transportation Project Engineer to support our Gulf Regionlocated in Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee.

To be considered for this position, applicants must have, at minimum, 4 years of experience in either Traffic or Roadway design.

What you'll be doing:

• Lead or assist in the design of transportation projects, including roadway geometry, drainage, traffic signals, signing and pavement marking, ITS, and maintenance of traffic plans
• Conduct traffic operations analyses and prepare traffic impact, safety, corridor, and long-range planning studies
• Prepare construction plans, specifications, quantities, cost estimates, technical reports, and memorandums
• Perform detailed engineering calculations and apply established DOT standards and practices to solve problems
• Direct EIs, designers, and interns, and coordinate with subconsultants to deliver projects on schedule, within budget, and in line with company QA/QC standards
• Participate in client meetings, business development efforts, and team initiatives
• Perform other duties as assigned

What you need to have:

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program (M.S. a plus)
• 4-10+ years of relevant experience in roadway design, traffic engineering, and/or transportation planning
• PE license
• Experience with DOT design methods, plan preparation, standards, and specifications, with proven skills in meeting DOT expectations, schedules, and budgets
• Familiarity with state and FHWA design standards, MUTCD, and AASHTO guidelines
• Proficiency with OpenRoads Designer and/or MicroStation
• Proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
• Self-motivated and dependable, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team to meet deadlines and deliver high-quality work
• Able to maintain project schedules, which may require occasional extended hours and overnight travel
• Effective verbal and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening to ensure a safe and productive work environment. Volkert adheres to federal guidelines, which may include testing for substances such as marijuana. Please note that federal regulations may differ from state-specific guidelines
• Valid driver's license and a satisfactory motor vehicle report (MVR)

Bonus points if you have:

• Experience with ALDOT, MDOT, TDOT, or local government agencies
• PTOE, PTP, and/or RSP certification
• Proficiency with traffic analysis software such as Synchro/SimTraffic, VISSIM, SIDRA Intersection, and HCS
• Familiarity with ArcGIS, InRoads, CUBE Voyager, or TransCAD
• Knowledge of transportation planning, including corridor analysis, DOT local programs, public involvement, safety and access management, and multimodal planning
• ITE membership
