Job summary

HNTB in Arlington, VA is seeking a Transportation Engineer to contribute to multimodal planning, safety analyses, and transportation studies for major infrastructure projects. You will prepare reports, maps, and presentations while coordinating with state and local agencies and stakeholders to support project delivery.

The role requires a Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Master’s preferred) with related experience, strong attention to detail, and proficiency in traffic software like Synchro,

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering with 2 years of relevant experience, or Master's degree in Engineering with 1 year of relevant experience.
  • Experience in traffic engineering and land use development review is preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and communication skills, with ability to present complex information clearly.

Responsibilities

  • Supports multimodal transportation planning, safety, and operational studies.
  • Reviews land development applications, engineering plans, and site designs for transportation impacts.
  • Prepares technical reports, maps, exhibits, and presentations to communicate findings.
  • Coordinates with state/local agencies, developers, consultants, and stakeholders; supports public outreach.

This opportunity entails:

  • Supporting multimodal transportation planning, safety, and operational studies, including corridor, intersection, bicycle, pedestrian, speed management, parking management, shared mobility, and traffic operations initiatives;
  • Assisting with short- and long-range transportation planning efforts and supporting special transportation projects;
  • Reviewing land development applications, engineering plans, and site designs to evaluate transportation impacts and ensure compliance with applicable standards;
  • Performing transportation analyses, evaluations, and engineering studies to support data-driven recommendations for improving roadway safety and operations;
  • Preparing technical reports, maps, exhibits, presentations, and other materials to communicate transportation data, findings, and recommendations;
  • Coordinating with state and local transportation agencies, developers, consultants, and other stakeholders, and assisting with public outreach and community engagement activities;
  • Interpreting engineering drawings, site plans, and technical reports to support engineering recommendations consistent with federal, state, and local laws, policies, standards, and guidelines;
  • Utilizing traffic analysis, traffic simulation, GIS, and other transportation planning tools to support project development while exercising sound engineering judgment and providing excellent customer service.

As a member of the team, you will contribute to the successful project delivery for a diverse range of projects for HNTB's clients.

What You'll Do
  • Completes assigned work within the schedule and number of hours provided.
  • Responsible for preparation and/or modification for select portions of project reports, plans, designs, and calculations.
  • Develops project quantities and assists with development of cost estimates.
  • Assists engineering teams with organization and administrative support of design files.
  • Able to self-sufficiently complete various tasks and duties including but not limited to research, data collection, field investigations, development, and design of projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
What You'll Need
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering and 2 years of relevant experience, or
  • Master's degree in Engineering and 1 year of relevant experience
What You'll Bring
  • Exhibiting exceptional attention to detail, and the ability to carry out complex projects effectively and simultaneously.
  • Displays proficiency in Traffic Simulation Software (Synchro, HCS, VISIM, SIDRA, etc.), ArcGIS, Microsoft Office Suite, MicroStation and/or AutoCad or other software as required for job assignments.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and review complex traffic studies.
  • Experience in traffic engineering, land use development application and site plan reviews.
  • Exhibiting strong communication, presentation and public speaking skills.
  • Exhibits proficiency in applying engineering, geometric and algebraic principles in your work.
What We Prefer
  • Master's degree in Engineering
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification
  • Knowledgeable in MicroStation and/or AutoCAD

The approximate pay range for Virginia is $85,580.52 - $128,370.78. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position based on all selected locations within the state at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual's qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as physical work location within the state.
