Job summary

The City of Fort Myers is seeking a Transportation Planner to perform professional planning work, review traffic impact statements, parking analyses, mobility studies, and transportation proposals to ensure compliance with the Land Development Code and Comprehensive Plan.

The role involves coordinating with engineers, public agencies, and staff; preparing technical reports; supporting Complete Streets initiatives, grant opportunities, and long-range transportation planning; and maintaining

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field is required.
  • Two years of professional transportation planning experience.
  • Experience reviewing Traffic Impact Statements preferred.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License with acceptable driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Review Traffic Impact Statements, parking studies, mobility assessments, and transportation analyses for land development.
  • Evaluate development applications for compliance with the Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Code.
  • Review proposed roadway, bicycle, pedestrian, transit, and multimodal improvements.
  • Coordinate reviews with Engineering, Public Works, Utilities, FDOT, MPO, Lee County, and other agencies.
  • Prepare technical reports and recommendations.
  • Assist with updates to the Transportation Element of the Comprehensive Plan.
  • Participate in transportation master planning, Complete Streets initiatives, corridor studies, and mobility planning.
  • Assist with transportation grants and capital improvement planning.
  • Collect and analyze transportation data.
  • Respond to inquiries from citizens, developers, consultants, and elected officials.
  • Attend public meetings and hearings.
  • Maintain transportation planning records and GIS mapping.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.

The Transportation Planner performs professional planning work involving the review of proposed development projects to evaluate transportation impacts, multimodal accessibility, and transportation infrastructure needs. The position reviews Traffic Impact Statements (TIS), parking analyses, mobility studies, and transportation-related development proposals to ensure compliance with the City's Land Development Code, Comprehensive Plan, and adopted transportation policies. The incumbent coordinates with developers, consultants, engineers, public agencies, and City staff while assisting with long-range transportation planning, capital improvement planning, grant opportunities, and transportation policy development.

Performs advanced professional transportation planning work requiring independent judgment and technical expertise. Reviews complex transportation analyses, prepares recommendations, coordinates with multiple agencies and stakeholders, and provides professional guidance on transportation planning matters.

Responsibilities and Reporting During an Emergency Situation

Essential Employees may be required to work during a declared emergency. Depending on the nature of the emergency, this may require working around the clock for several days on short notice.

Non-Essential Employees will not be required to work during a declared emergency. The employee’s Department Head will determine when the employee will be required to work.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of transportation planning principles and development review.

  • Knowledge of traffic engineering concepts and multimodal transportation.

  • Ability to interpret Traffic Impact Statements.

  • Strong analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to establish effective working relationships.

  • Ability to manage multiple assignments.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; GIS experience preferred.

  • Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Transportation Planning, Civil Engineering, Geography, Public Administration, or related field.

  • Two (2) years of professional transportation planning, traffic engineering, or transportation review experience.

  • One (1) year experience reviewing Traffic Impact Statements.

  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
  • AICP Certification.
  • Experience with GIS.
  • Experience with FDOT standards and Florida growth management.
  • Experience with Mobility Fee

This work typically requires the following physical activities to be performed.

Work performed is primarily:

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is primarily performed in an office environment with periodic field inspections. Attendance at evening public meetings may be required. Occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions during site visits. Frequent interaction with City staff, consultants, developers, regulatory agencies, and the public.
