Carteret County Public Schools Transportation Department in Beaufort, North Carolina, seeks a Transportation Mechanic I to maintain district vehicles, diagnose repairs, and perform routine maintenance. Job Description

Title: Transportation Mechanic I

Qualifications: 1.High School graduate or GED with CDL license or ability to obtain one.

  • Some experience and training with vehicle operation, maintenance and repair is preferred.
  • Demonstrate aptitude and competence for assigned responsibility.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board or Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.

Reports to: Transportation Director

Supervises: N/A

Job Goal: To keep the district's vehicles in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problems or interruptions to the educational program.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Follow all rules, policies, and procedures of Carteret County Public Schools, along with regulations pertaining to the Transportation Department.
  • Diagnose minor and frequently occurring mechanical problems using diagnostic equipment.
  • Performs routine bus maintenance and preventive care.
  • Fills fuel tanks on school buses and school-owned vehicles.
  • Lubricates moving parts of vehicle chassis.
  • Checks, adds, and replaces brake and steering fluids.
  • Checks, adds, and changes engine oil.
  • Installs air and oil filters.
  • Replaces wiper blades and fan belts.
  • Rotates, replaces, and repairs tires.
  • Replaces brake linings.
  • Cleans, adjusts, and changes spark plugs.
  • Drains and cleans radiators.
  • Inspects exterior and interior of vehicles for defects.
  • Removes minor dents.
  • Paints buses and vehicles with spray equipment.
  • Tests headlight alignment and makes necessary adjustments.
  • Cleans fuel systems, ignition systems, and electrical components.
  • Tests and replaces batteries as needed.
  • Checks and repairs doors and lifts.
  • Repairs seat belts.
  • Repairs broken windows.
  • Promotes high standard of safety and good housekeeping methods in all work-connected areas.
  • Keeps current and accurate timecard.
  • Performs other duties as specified by the Transportation Director.

Special Requirements: Appropriate North Carolina driver's license for the weight and type of vehicles operated as required by the Department of Motor Vehicles. (Class A CDL) with N, P&S endorsements. N.C. School Bus Inspector Certification.

Starting Salary and/or Grade: Grade 61

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrate knowledge of school bus and vehicles operation and maintenance.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the operating principles of internal combustion engines.
  • Skill to perform manual tasks associated with engine maintenance, tire replacement, and vehicle body repair.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to physically perform most repairs.
  • Demonstrate general knowledge and skill in the use and operation of shop tools and machinery.
  • Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.
  • Ability to interpret and work from sketches, diagrams, and installation and repair charts.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
  • Physical ability (able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally) and dexterity to perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, such as, walk, lift, stoop, stand, grasp, kneel, crouch and key requiring repetitive motions.
