State of Michigan is hiring Transportation Maintenance Workers for winter and general maintenance of state trunklines in the Grand Region. These are limited-term positions from October to April with no guarantee of extension.

You will operate heavy equipment, travel with a crew, and may be assigned region-wide winter duties. CDL Class A with N or X endorsement must be obtained within 12 months of hire. The role may involve testing and drug screening where required by policy.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is typically required.
• CDL Class A with N or X endorsement and no air brake restrictions must be obtained within 12 months of hire.
• Experience in roadway, roadside, bridge, or sign maintenance or Pavement marking is relevant.

Job Description

FILLING SEVERAL LIMITED-TERM WINTER MAINTENANCE POSITIONS THAT MAY LAST FROM OCTOBER TO APRIL, BUT WITH NO GUARANTEE.

This position performs maintenance of state trunklines within the right-of-way in the Grand Region and operates various pieces of equipment used in the maintenance and repair of roadways, Bridges, Forestry, Sign, and Winter Maintenance operations. This position is required to participate in the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) Transportation Maintenance Worker (TMW) work element system and travel with a crew in the assigned geographic area. Winter months are spent performing winter maintenance duties which may be Region-wide while on temporary winter assignment to Maintenance Garages. Operate a vehicle or vehicle/trailer combination with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more (e.g. lift bed truck, hydraulic crane, snowplow, etc.) when performing maintenance activities.

The "Salary" listed above is a range that reflects the minimum rate at the entry (6) level through the maximum rate at the experienced (E8) level. Based on education and experience, candidates will be reviewed to determine what level they are qualified for.

Experience

Transportation Maintenance Worker 6

Transportation Maintenance Worker 7

One year of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 6 or Laborer E6 with experience in roadway, roadside, bridge, or sign maintenance, or pavement marking.

Transportation Maintenance Worker E8

Two years of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 7; or, one year of skilled trades experience at the E9 level.

To be considered for this position you must:

• Transportation Maintenance Worker 6, 7, E8: Possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) at the time of appointment to the position. Continuing employment requires possession of a CDL Group A with N or X endorsement and no air brake restrictions which must be obtained within 12 months from the date of hire into the position and maintained throughout employment in the position.
• Transportation Maintenance Worker E8: The MDOT Statewide Work Element Coordinator must approve satisfactory completion of the MDOT TMW Work Element training and certification program.
