Job description

Job Summary

Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as roadway maintenance and repair, light and heavy equipment operation, preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control, and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Essential Duties (Transportation Maintenance Tech I)

• Assist in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; perform basic welding as needed; use and move equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.
• Assist in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assist stranded motorists as required.
• Assist with traffic control; place and gather cones, warning signs and barricades; flag traffic.
• Determine placement of traffic control devices and install/move devices.
• Inspect barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
• Maintain highways and rights‑of‑way; perform roadway repairs; erect and repair guard rails, highway markers and signs; haul materials and equipment to job sites.
• Maintain picnic and rest areas, rights‑of‑way, maintenance yards and comfort stations.
• Move/pick up litter and roadway debris.
• Mow rights‑of‑way and picnic and rest areas; perform plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.
• Operate light equipment such as front‑end loader (one cubic yard or less), pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
• Perform preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and complete various required reports including timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms and PMI.
• Sand or clean bridges and roads, post warning signs, help the public and perform other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
• Assist with inspecting maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
• Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.

Additional Duties (Transportation Maintenance Tech II)

• Serve as the only maintenance contract inspector on a small project.
• Assist in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices, safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
• Maintain construction project records and/or bridge inspection records; process related paperwork; review files for compliance with the bridge inspection Manual of Procedures.
• Maintain highways and rights‑of‑way; perform skilled roadway repairs; erect and repair guard rails, highway markers and signs; haul materials and equipment to job sites.
• Operate heavy equipment such as front‑end loader (one and a half cubic yards or more), tractor‑trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.
• Identify, repair, and install signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; perform welding; use and move equipment/tools, materials and products.
• Inspect routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
• Identify, analyze, and implement solutions for complex maintenance problems.
• Inspect materials, equipment, and production procedures in a manufacturing plant or at point of supply to ensure construction materials meet Department specifications.
• Work on a survey crew; operate survey instruments such as theodolite, transit and level, electronic distance meter, and total survey station.
• Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

No education required.

• Transportation Maintenance Tech I: No experience required.
• Transportation Maintenance Tech II: 1 year experience in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work. Experience can be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent. Related technical training or education may be substituted for experience on a one‑to‑one basis.

Licenses and Certifications

• Valid driver’s license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
• Must hold a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or obtain a CDL "A" within 120 calendar days from the date of employment.
• US Military CDL Equivalent candidates must obtain a Texas Class "A" CDL within the specified timeframe.

Preferred Qualifications

• Commercial Driver’s License.

Physical Requirements

• Required to wear protective gear, including respirator, hard hat, steel‑toed boots, and other equipment.
• Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 or above 100 degrees for more than one hour.

• Subject to hazards such as moving vehicles/pneumatic parts, high places/heat, or chemicals.
• Subject to atmospheric conditions – fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, poor ventilation.
• Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.

Conditions of Employment

• Pre‑employment physical exam required.
• Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions; this is a Safety Impact position and may be subject to random drug testing.
• Must be able to report for duty within XX minutes of notification on a 24‑hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
