TxDOT's Fort Worth District is seeking a Transportation Maintenance Technician I or II to join our team at 1208 S. Main Street, Jacksboro, TX 76458. In this role, you'll be part of a dedicated team responsible for maintaining highways and transportation infrastructure that keep Texas moving. TMT I - Salary Grade: A16 / $40,918 - $61,130


TMT II - Salary Grade: A17 / $42,976 - $64,469


A Day in the Life - Transportation Maintenance Tech I:


  • Setup temporary traffic control.

  • Maintenance and/or material and process inspection.

  • Maintain drainage systems, dig and clean ditches and repair culverts, inlets and erosion.

  • Clear debris, maintain wooded areas, clear brush, mow grass and spray roadside vegetation.

  • Repair guardrails, concrete barriers, roadway delineators, milepost markers and fences.

  • Helping the public during emergency situations.

  • Work requires contact with private entities.

  • Other duties as assigned

  • Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.


A Day in the Life - Transportation Maintenance Tech II (additional duties):


  • Operate a variety of equipment and perform manual labor to repair roadway surfaces and shoulders.

  • Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices; safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

  • Light and heavy equipment operation requiring a Class "A" CDL.


This position is for one (1) General Transportation Tech I or II. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level, and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.

Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.


Transportation Maintenance Tech I Essential Duties:

Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.


Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.


Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.


Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves devices.


Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.


Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.


Operates complex heavy equipment such as motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor and profiling/milling machine.


Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yard or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.


Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.


Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Transportation Maintenance Tech II (including Transportation Maintenance Tech I) Essential Duties:

Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices; safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.


Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs welding; and uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products.


Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.


Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.


Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.



  • Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck large dragline shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.

  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods. tornadoes, hurricanes. snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.

  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

Experience for Transportation Maintenance Tech (TMT):

TMT I = No experience required


TMT II = 1 year experience*


*Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications .


Licenses and Certifications:

TMT I



  • Valid driver’s license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

  • Mandatory: Safety Impact Certificate


TMT II (including Transportation Maintenance Technician I licenses and certifications):


Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A” License at time of application.

Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.


Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.


Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.


Employee may be contacted during off-duty hours to see if he or she can report to work for emergency conditions. Must report within one (1) hour.


This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.


Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
