Join the Waco District's transportation team as part of our Falls Co. Maintenance Office -- where every day brings a hands-on mission to keep our roadways safe and reliable. From repairing highways and operating heavy equipment to setting up traffic control zones and assisting travelers during emergencies, your work will be essential to keeping communities connected. You'll be out in the field making a visible difference, all while following well-established procedures and working closely with both teammates and members of the public. Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

The essential duties for the Transportation Maintenance Tech I include:

Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.

Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.

Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.

Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yard or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.

Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.

Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.

Performs other job responsibilities as assigned

Additional duties for Transportation Maintenance Tech II include:

Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices; safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.

Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; asists stranded motorists as required.

Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs welding; and uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products.

Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.

Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.

Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Experience for Transportation Maintenance Tech (TMT):

TMT I = No experience required

TMT II = 1 year experience*

*Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications .

Licenses and Certifications:

TMT I:

• Valid driver’s license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A" License, within 90 calendar days from date of employment.

TMT II:

• Valid driver’s license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License at time of application, and obtained an "N" Endorsement within 90 calendar days from date of employment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Required to wear protective gear, including, respirator, hard hat, steal toed boots, and other equipment or devices

Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.

Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
