Job summary

Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Laredo Maintenance is seeking a Transportation Maintenance Technician I to support roadway upkeep in the Laredo district. Work outdoors, learn hands-on skills, and contribute to safe travel.

No prior experience required; TxDOT provides training, benefits, and a team of more than 13,000 employees. Schedule Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm; onsite with 25% travel.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of intermodal transportation construction and maintenance.
• Familiar with inspection methods and highway materials.
• Basic math skills and record-keeping abilities.
• Awareness of safety standards and use of tools and equipment.
• Ability to operate light and some heavy highway equipment.

Responsibilities

• Assist in identifying, repairing and installing signs and posts.
• Assist local law enforcement at accident sites and assist stranded motorists.
• Determine placement of traffic control devices.
• Maintain highways and rights-of-way; erect/repair guard rails and signs.
• Operate light equipment such as front-end loader and street sweeper.

Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

The essential duties for the Transportation Maintenance Tech I include

Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.

Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.

Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves devices.

Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.

Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.

Maintains picnic and rest areas, rights-of-way, maintenance yards and comfort stations.

Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.

Mows rights-of-way and picnic and rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.

Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yard or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.

Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.

Performs other job responsibilities as assigned

Education

Experience for Transportation Maintenance Tech (TMT)

TMT I = No experience required

Licenses and Certifications

• Valid driver’s license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement from date of employment.

The required competencies for the Transportation Maintenance Tech I include

Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work

Applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques

Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance

Using basic mathematical fundamentals

Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes
