Position Information

The Materials and Tests Division (MTD) delivers statewide service and technical expertise in materials quality and technology to support the Texas transportation system. MTD is comprised of multiple sections and labs: Quality Assurance, Structural Materials Operations Section, Structural Materials Field/Engineering Section, Coatings, Calibrations, and Traffic Materials, Flexible Pavements, Asphalt Binder, and Rigid Pavement and Concrete Materials. We are seeking Transportation Engineers to join our state‑of‑the‑art laboratory and work alongside industry-leading experts.

Performs complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Performs advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Performs highly advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations, maintenance and/or [research]. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Performs engineering analysis of statewide materials conditions and develops reports

Writes reports, specifications and test procedures.

Leads/Trains professional and administrative staff.

Monitors consultants' progress and work quality; checks invoices and associated documents; prepares supplementalagreements.

Monitors contractors' compliance with plans and specifications.

Provides assistance and technical support to districts, divisions and the FHWA in matters concerning bridgemaintenance.

Provides information regarding innovative and experimental technologies to department personnel.

Develops and supports implementation activities for new methods, procedures, and technologies.

Gives presentations on TxDOT research program activities to departmental personnel and outside entities.

Reviews and provides guidance on research project reports and other deliverables.

Reviews, edits and provides guidance on research project statements for Research Management Committees.

Makes presentations and represents TxDOT.

Represents the district/division at technical meetings and public hearings at local, state, federal and/or international

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:

Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.

Experience:

Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Licensed Prof Engineer*

*Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour

This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
