Job summary

Caltrans seeks a Maintenance TMS Engineer in Orange County to perform field and office electrical maintenance for Transportation Management Systems and related signaling and lighting systems. Incumbent will prepare PS&E and coordinate with Electrical Maintenance, TO and Construction for operation status at the TMC.

The role requires navigating MQs, potential eligibility checks, and background requirements; a thorough understanding of TE Electrical classification may apply.

  • Act as maintenance engineering support in all aspects of TMS field elements.

Job Description And Duties

Under the general supervision of a Senior Transportation Electrical Engineer, the incumbent will perform the transportation field and office electrical, electronic and related maintenance engineering work relating to Transportation Management Systems (TMS) elements, Traffic Signals, sign and lighting systems, communication systems, and other electrical systems. Incumbent will prepare and review reports, plans, and specifications, and estimates (PS&E) for the installation, repair and maintenance of aforementioned electrical systems. Incumbent will coordinate with the Electrical Maintenance, Traffic Operations (TO) and Construction for operational status of all field elements reporting to and from the Transportation Management Center (TMC) and other systems. Incumbent will act as maintenance engineering support in all aspects of TMS field elements.

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Transportation Engineer (Electrical) exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Candidates are required to review the Minimum Qualifications (MQs) for this classification. If you meet MQs under Pattern II and require the TE Electrical in-person written hurdle exam, DO NOT TAKE the TE Electrical online exam prior to passing the written hurdle. Candidates who take the TE Electrical online exam prior to passing the written hurdle may negatively impact their hiring eligibility. Special Requirements
  • Appointment to Range D requires a valid Professional Engineering License (Electrical) issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. For all other ranges, a PE license is not required.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state or leased vehicle.
  • Candidates selected for this position must successfully pass a Department of Justice background check and the incumbent is also required to sign CHP Form 101A annually.
  • Statement of qualifications (SOQ) required.
