Job summary

Vanasse Hangen Brustlin Inc. in Tampa, FL seeks an experienced Transportation Engineer to contribute to highway design, drainage, traffic management, and cost estimating. You will work with FDOT, local governments, and private developers to deliver integrated transportation solutions.

The role focuses on OpenRoads Designer-based design, plan production, and 3D corridor modeling, with opportunities for growth within the organization. Strong collaboration and communication are essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, transportation planning or related field.
  • 5-8+ years of professional transportation engineering experience with a focus on roadway design.
  • Current FL Professional Engineer (PE) license required or ability to obtain in 6 months.
  • Experience working in the Florida Market, specifically the Tampa Bay area.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver roadway and highway transportation projects from planning and preliminary engineering through final design and construction support.
  • Develop roadway geometric designs, including horizontal and vertical alignments, profiles, cross sections, superelevation, grading, and corridor modeling.
  • Coordinate roadway design with drainage, utilities, structures, traffic, and environmental disciplines to ensure integrated project delivery.
  • Prepare roadway plan sets in accordance with FDOT FDM and CADD standards, including plan/profile sheets, cross sections, roadway details, and signing/pavement marking plans.
  • Develop and maintain 3D roadway corridor models using OpenRoads Designer, supporting design visualization, quantity development, and construction documentation.
  • Perform earthwork calculations, quantity takeoffs, and construction cost estimates using Quantity Manager and related tools.
  • Develop Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) plans, pavement designs, and design variations/exceptions to support roadway designs.
  • Prepare and manage technical design documentation, reports, and project specifications for roadway design packages.
  • Support construction administration activities, including responding to RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and addressing field design issues.
  • Attend meetings with clients, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders to establish their needs and discuss transportation design/permitting issues.
  • Collaborate with other VHB professionals to deliver projects with an integrated thinking approach.
  • Mentor and train junior staff in transportation engineering and general professional growth.

Responsibilities

VHB is seeking an individual to work within a team of highly motivated engineers to produce fully coordinated reports, plans, specifications, and deliverables. This may include:

  • Design and deliver roadway and highway transportation projects from planning and preliminary engineering through final design and construction support.
  • Develop roadway geometric designs, including horizontal and vertical alignments, profiles, cross sections, superelevation, grading, and corridor modeling.

Skills & Abilities
  • Experience with OpenRoads Designer (ORD) for roadway modeling and plan production required; AutoCAD or MicroStation experience a plus.
  • Knowledge of roadway geometric design principles, including horizontal/vertical alignment, superelevation, and corridor development.
  • Knowledge with FDOT design standards, FDM, and CADD production requirements.
  • Ability to develop or support 3D roadway models and digital terrain models.
  • Ability to manage multiple roadway design tasks and project schedules simultaneously.
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Strong collaborative work ethic and ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Technical and project management experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new engineering software, manage multiple tasks, and follow project standards and procedure.
  • Knowledge of local and state regulations governing transportation design.
Qualifications

The full-time annual base salary range for this position, located in Tampa, FL, is $90,000 to $115,000. The base salary offered will be determined based on job-related factors, including geographic location, internal equity, experience, credentials, skills, education, work schedule, and other factors permitted by law. The posted salary range reflects base pay only. Additional compensation and benefits available to eligible employees are outlined in our Total Rewards Program.

Annual base salary is one component of VHB's Total Rewards package. In addition to base pay, eligible employees may receive annual incentive compensation bonuses, spot bonuses, and merit-based salary increases, providing opportunities to increase earnings beyond base pay.
