Job summary

HDR is seeking a Transportation Engineer (Highway/Roadway) to join our Virginia-based Roads team. You will design and refine highway layouts, prepare contract plans, and collaborate with multidisciplinary staff on mid‑ to large‑scale projects across the Mid‑Atlantic.

With a PE license and 5+ years of roadway design experience, you will lead small teams, mentor junior engineers, manage scopes and budgets, and coordinate with clients and subconsultants to deliver high‑quality, on‑time solutions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required and Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
• Minimum of 5 years experience in roadway engineering design across all aspects.
• Experience with OpenRoads 3D Corridor Modeling strongly preferred.
• Experience on VDOT, DDOT, MDTA and/or MDSHA projects preferred.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to lead teams and manage multiple projects.

Responsibilities

• Work as a key member of a highway/roadway design team for moderate to large projects or independently on smaller projects.
• Prepare or oversee roadway/highway design work using local or AASHTO standards: horizontal/vertical alignment, interchanges, drainage, right‑of‑way.
• Prepare and oversee contract plans, specs, and estimates: sections, alignments, drainage, paving, markings, traffic control.
• Assist in management of larger projects or manage smaller ones; include scopes, budgets, and schedules.
• Manage day‑to‑day client communications; mentor junior staff; write reports; coordinate with subconsultants; keep on schedule and budget.
• Perform other duties as needed.

In the role of Transportation Engineer (Highway/Roadway), we'll count on you to:

• Work as a key member of a highway/roadway design team for moderate to large projects and work independently on smaller projects
• Prepare or oversee the following roadway/highway design work using local or AASHTO standards: horizontal and vertical alignment, roadway sections, intersection layout and sight distance determination, interchange layout, roadway drainage including hydraulic reports, and right‑of‑way plans
• Prepare and oversee the following elements of various sizes of contract plans, specifications and estimates: roadway sections, alignment/right‑of‑way plans, temporary erosion control plans, site preparation plans, roadway profiles, drainage plans and profiles, utility plans, paving, pavement marking plans, signing plans, traffic control plans
• Assist in the management of larger projects or manage smaller projects
• Include preparing scopes, budgets and schedules
• Manage the following work elements: day‑to‑day communication (verbal and written) with the client, support and advise junior engineers and technical staff, write reports and technical memos, coordinate with subconsultants, keep project on schedule and within budget, and keep client satisfied
• Perform other duties as needed

Preferred Qualifications

• A minimum of 5 years experience in all aspects of roadway engineering design
• Experience with OpenRoads 3D Corridor Modeling strongly preferred

• Excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to work with various teams, and leadership and management skills desirable
• Preference given to candidates currently residing in the Mid‑Atlantic (VA, MD, DC) Area

Required Qualifications

• Previous experience in all aspects of roadway engineering design
• Professional Engineer (PE) license
• Hands‑on experience with Highways and Roads CAD engineeringsoftware such as Bentley ConceptStation and Open Roads Designer and/orAutodesk Infraworks and Civil3d
• MS Office knowledge
• Excellent communication and organizational skills
• Experience should include urban and rural highway interchanges, intersection design, traffic management, transportation planning, site planning, preparation of concept alignments, geometrical layout and CAD base alignment plans
