Job summary

HDR is seeking a Highway/Roads Engineer in Anchorage, Alaska. Join our employee-owned Transportation Group to design and deliver highway projects that improve mobility and safety across urban and rural settings.

You will work under the direction of a Project Manager, lead technical design efforts, and collaborate with CAD staff while engaging with clients. Preferred candidates bring 5+ years in roadway design, experience with Autodesk Civil 3D/Open Roads Designer, and a PE license.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil/traffic engineering or related field.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • Hands-on experience with CAD software such as Civil 3D, InfraWorks, Open Roads Designer.
  • MS Office knowledge.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Experience with Alaska DOT&PF projects is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead technical design efforts for highway projects under PM guidance.
  • Oversee CAD Designers, EITs.
  • Prepare detailed roadway designs for urban and rural contexts.
  • Support feasibility analysis through final construction.
  • Engage with clients as needed.
  • Perform other duties as needed.

In the role of Highway/Roads Engineer, we’ll count on you to:

  • Serve in a lead technical role under the direction of a Project Manager on the engineering development of urban and rural highway/roadway projects
  • Oversee the work of CAD Designers, and EITs
  • Prepare detailed engineering designs for roadway and highway projects
  • Participate in activities ranging from site feasibility analysis to final design and through the construction phase
  • Assume some project management duties and interact with clients as needed
  • Perform other duties as needed

Preferred Qualifications

  • A minimum of 5 years experience in all aspects of roadway engineering design
  • Experience corridor modeling, grading, and drafting plansheets in Autodesk Civil 3D
  • Experience working on Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities projects
  • Familiarity with reading and modifying project specifications and special provisions

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Previous experience in all aspects of roadway engineering design
  • Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered. Example: Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
  • Hands‑on experience with Highways and Roads CAD engineering software such as Bentley ConceptStation and Open Roads Designer and/or Autodesk Infraworks and Civil3d
  • MS Office knowledge
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Experience should include urban and rural highway interchanges, intersection design, traffic management, transportation planning, site planning, preparation of concept alignments, geometrical layout and CAD base alignment plans
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee‑owned culture is a must
