Job description

Transportation and Logistics Manager is responsible for translating business needs and priorities into logistics strategies and programs that drive growth, improve customer experience, reduce costs, and enhance safety. This role identifies and implements best practices in all aspects of logistics by building efficient truckloads based on product availability, maximizing load capacity through strong product knowledge and sales aptitude, scheduling drivers for outbound and inbound deliveries, and planning and adjusting routes as needed. A key responsibility is proactively selling available products to dealers and customers to fill truckloads, increase transportation efficiency, and support company sales objectives.

In this role, you will coordinate common carriers and manage driver schedules to ensure products are picked up and delivered efficiently and on time while maintaining compliance with DOT regulations. Timely product delivery requires close coordination with dealers, sales, customer service, shipping, maintenance, receiving, and accounting. Through strong communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and leadership, you will create a positive environment that exceeds company goals while balancing customer needs, operational efficiency, and profitability.

Responsibilities:

Must be able to:

  • Supervise and direct the day-to-day operations of dispatch, fleet of trucks, and drivers.
  • Schedule both inbound and outbound shipments and deliveries.
  • Build trip rate sheets using Trip Manager and Shipping Calendar.
  • Optimize truck loads based on product availability, delivery requirements, route efficiency, and order priorities.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to sell available inventory and coordinate with dealers, distributors, and the sales team to maximize load capacity and transportation efficiency.
  • Develop creative load-building solutions by combining orders and product availability to reduce freight costs and improve profitability.
  • Coordinate with sales, dealers, distributors, and customer service to align delivery schedules and fulfill customer needs while maximizing truckload utilization.
  • Partner with the Purchasing team to optimize inbound logistics, consolidate shipments when appropriate, minimize freight expenses, and improve supplier delivery performance to ensure on-time delivery of materials to support production requirements.
  • Monitor supplier shipping performance and proactively address delivery, damage, or freight-related issues to minimize disruptions to operations.
  • Select and schedule Central Boiler truck drivers if available and utilize common carrier truck driver selection process for remaining loads.
  • Negotiate rates with common carriers.
  • Plan pre-determined routes and accommodate route changes as needed.
  • Maintain records of dispatched calls, driver routes, route changes as well as delivery and pick-up times.
  • Build and maintain excellent working relationships with all carriers and drivers considering personal schedules and requests from drivers.
  • Build and maintain excellent working relationships with all Dealers.
  • Coordinate product delivery and pick up for all company trade shows
  • Provide leadership, coaching, training, and performance feedback to company drivers.
  • Promote and enforce safety standards, DOT compliance requirements, and company policies.
  • Monitor driver productivity, transportation costs, and service performance metrics.
  • Assist with driver onboarding, scheduling, and staffing needs.
  • Partner with Maintenance to ensure fleet availability and minimize downtime.
  • At times will be asked to communicate with dealers and customers in group public speaking settings, whether that be for dealer training, shows, tours, and other company initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
Minimum/Essential Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in dispatch, transportation, logistics, shipping, warehousing, or a related operations environment.
  • Work efficiently with the ability to prioritize daily workload with minimal supervision.
  • Experience with various computer programs including phone systems, ERP software, and Microsoft Suite platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve conflict and handle oneself professionally under pressure.
  • Foster a strong team environment; collaborate and influence effectively
  • Demonstrate approachability and high degree of perseverance
  • Ability to analyze transportation needs, solve problems, and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of DOT regulations, transportation safety requirements, and compliance standards, or the ability to quickly acquire such knowledge.
  • Ability to maintain regular and reliable attendance and work flexible hours when business demands require.
Preferred Experience:
  • Previous dispatch, transportation, or logistics experience
  • Supervisory or leadership experience
  • Previous trucking industry experience
  • Sales or customer service experience
  • CDL or experience working with CDL drivers
  • Experience negotiating freight rates and working with common carriers

Physical requirements include: standing, sitting, squatting, walking, kneeling, stooping, crouching and reaching out to arm’s length, reaching over-head, lifting up to 55 pounds. The salary range for this role is $61,500 to $120,000 annually. The salary range for the position is flexible and will be determined by several factors, such as the candidate's previous related work experience, education, knowledge, technical skills, performance and abilities.
