Transplant Nephrology Fellowship

Academic Year: July 1, 2027 – June 30, 2028

The Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at Vanderbilt Health is pleased to announce an available Transplant Nephrology Fellowship position for the academic year beginning July 1, 2027 and concluding June 30, 2028.

Our one-year, ACGME-accredited and AST-certified Transplant Nephrology Fellowship provides comprehensive training in kidney and kidney-pancreas transplantation. Fellows gain experience across the full transplant continuum: recipient evaluation, living and deceased donor assessment, perioperative care, inpatient transplant nephrology, outpatient post-transplant management, immunosuppression, transplant complications, rejection, recurrent kidney disease, and quality improvement.

Upon successful completion, fellows meet the training requirements to serve as transplant nephrologists under OPTN/UNOS criteria and graduate from an ACGME-accredited and AST-certified program.

A LEADING TRANSPLANT CENTER

Vanderbilt Health is home to one of the largest and most active transplant centers in the country, performing more than 400 kidney transplants in the past year, including simultaneous pancreas-kidney, heart-kidney, and liver-kidney transplantation. With robust kidney, pancreas, heart, liver, lung, and multi-organ transplant programs, Vanderbilt offers fellows broad exposure to complex transplant medicine in a high-volume academic environment.

FELLOWSHIP STRUCTURE

• Six months of inpatient transplant nephrology, where the fellow serves as the primary transplant nephrology trainee and participates in perioperative management, inpatient consults, rejection treatment, post-transplant complications, and multidisciplinary care.
• Six months of outpatient, elective, and scholarly training, including transplant clinic, living donor evaluation, recipient evaluation, transplant pathology, histocompatibility and tissue typing, organ procurement, non-renal solid organ transplantation, pediatric transplant nephrology, quality improvement, and clinical research.

STRUCTURED TRANSPLANT DIDACTIC PROGRAM

Fellows participate in a structured didactic program that includes:

• Weekly Kidney–Pancreas Transplant Conference
• Weekly Transplant Complex Case Conference
• Monthly Renal Transplant Biopsy Conference
• Biweekly Transplant Infectious Disease Lecture
• Weekly transplant and nephrology physiology lectures
• Weekly Research Conference
• Biweekly Transplant Research Executive Committee
• Monthly Transplant Teaching Program across solid-organ transplant services
• Weekly Donor Selection Committee
• Weekly Recipient Selection Committee
• Biweekly VAMP Meeting for amyloidosis and paraproteinemia
• Surgery Transplant Conference
• Journal clubs and divisional didactics
• Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement meetings
• Weekly Fellow–Program Director meeting for teaching, mentoring, and career development

These conferences provide multidisciplinary exposure to transplant surgery, pathology, histocompatibility, pharmacy, infectious disease, hepatology, cardiology, pediatrics, organ procurement, quality, regulatory practice, and transplant administration.
