Job Summary

This position is for the role of a Modeling Engineer in the Ratings & Configuration (R&C) team within the Transmission System Operations Engineering (TSOE) organization. The role entails supporting the activities necessary to ensure compliance with applicable NERC and industry standards related to configuration changes to the transmission grid. Expected activities include but are not limited to:

  • Accurately model transmission system topology including impedance and facility ratings for lines, stations, and transformers for medium, high, and extra-high voltages using AEP-internal modeling databases.
  • Fulfill various system modeling related requests from Engineering and Operations personnel and submitted via ServiceNow ticketing system.
  • Collaborate with others internal/external to the team to model planned projects, representing the future transmission system, as needed.
  • Perform activities related to NERC Compliance standards.

Technical Expertise: Possesses entry-level knowledge and experience in the application of theory to solve well-defined problems or provide analysis, with guidance from higher-level engineers. Assists higher-level engineers in handling well-defined portions of more complex problems and analyses. Exhibits fundamental understanding of standards, codes and regulations relevant to the area of assignment. Gains familiarity with standards, codes and regulations relevant to the area of assignment. Gains familiarity with pertinent equipment, materials, systems and business processes.

Leadership & Guidance: Coordinates work activities of others as required to resolve routine engineering tasks. Demonstrates working knowledge of appropriate policies and procedures; however, activities are generally monitored by higher-level employees to ensure work is performed in accordance with established guidelines. Performs work activities as assigned and coached by higher-level employees. Demonstrates ability to work with others in both supplying information and seeking assistance as necessary. Demonstrates willingness and capabilities to assume leadership roles.

Problem Solving & Initiative: Actively seeks out information and understanding of engineering problems and solution techniques applicable to area of responsibility. This role requires schedule flexibility. Candidates should expect to work outside of standard business hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. The ability to work non‑traditional hours and adapt to changing schedules is essential for success in this position.

What we’re looking for:
Minimum Requirements – Grade 6

This is an entry-level position for new graduates with a bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET‑accredited program*. Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering examination, as preparation for future licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE), is encouraged and preferred.

Individuals with a bachelor’s degree in engineering technology may also satisfy this degree requirement if they obtain a certified Professional Engineer (PE) license.

Minimum Requirements – Grade 7

Has typically acquired 2 or more years of related experience in work activities and projects requiring the application of engineering technology principles;

Bachelor's degree in engineering technology* in a program accredited by ABET**.* A degree in engineering technology is the preferred degree: however, engineering degrees will also be considered.

  • ABET - Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.
  • Acceptable alternative is (1) a Bachelor's degree in engineering technology (non-ABET) plus a Master's degree or PhD in engineering technology from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor's program.
  • VP or above may waive the requirement for a degree from a university with an Non ABET accredited program
