Job summary

AES Corporation seeks a Transmission Planning Operations Engineer to coordinate long- and short-term outage planning, project schedules, and network model changes across MISO and PJM. The role requires engineering delivery without supervision and a minimum of 2 years in the electric utility sector.

Responsibilities include maintaining construction schedules in Primavera P6, conducting NERC MOC reviews, and supporting outage coordination efforts to minimize risk.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in mechanical or electrical engineering.
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in the Electric Utility industry.
  • Ability to perform analysis and prepare engineering deliverables without supervision.
  • Passing Grade on Fundamentals of Engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a coordinated construction project list and integrated project schedule using Primavera P6 to align planning, development and execution.
  • Quality control review of consultant schedules including Facility Study schedules.
  • Annual review of the coordinated project list to support long-lead material and labor planning.
  • Support the existing NERC Management of Change compliance structure and route changes to appropriate owners.
  • Support short- and long-term operational planning horizons for outage coordination using power flow models.
  • Coordinate outage-related planning input with System Operations and PMO functions for holistic scheduling.
  • Manage MISO and PJM operational/network models and coordinate with System Planning on forecasted changes.
  • Submit and maintain tickets in MISO CROW and PJM eDART for project and outage model changes.
  • Provide Transmission Operations Center support during emergencies to restore energization.

The Transmission Planning Operations Engineer will be responsible for independently conducting operational planning coordination in connection with the transmission project portfolio, including construction schedule coordination, management of change support, and outage and network model coordination across MISO and PJM.

Job Responsibilities
  • Perform with assistance the maintenance of a coordinated construction project list and integrated project schedule, using P6 as the source of schedule data, to provide a common reference across planning, development, engineering, execution, and close-out stages, and to capture project shifts and scope adjustments as they occur.
  • Perform with assistance quality control review of consultant-prepared construction schedules, including but not limited to Facility Study schedules.
  • Perform with assistance the annual review of the coordinated project list to inform prioritization and scope fidelity as electric network conditions and needs evolve, supporting long-lead material planning and labor resource planning.
  • Perform with assistance the team's existing NERC Management of Change compliance structure by evaluating when project changes require review or re-evaluation by the appropriate subject matter experts, including but not limited to PRC-004, PRC-025, PRC-027, FAC-002, and FAC-008, and routing changes to the appropriate owners within the compliance structure.
  • Independently support long-term (three-year and one-year) and short-term (three-month) operational planning horizons for outage coordination, utilizing power flow models to coordinate planned outages and reduce the risk of projects failing to obtain required outage approvals.
  • Coordinate outage-related planning input with the System Operations and PMO functions to support holistic outage scheduling across the business.
  • Independently manage the MISO and PJM operational/network models and coordinate with the System Planning team on forecasted modeling changes.
  • Independently submit and maintain tickets in MISO CROW and PJM eDART to reflect project and outage-related model changes.
  • Provide the Transmission Operations Control Center assistance in times of emergency such as extreme weather events, emergency repairs, or system restoration to ensure a timely return to energization of AES customers.
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or similar.
  • A minimum of 2 years' experience working in the Electric Utility industry
  • Ability to perform analysis and prepare engineering deliverables without supervision
  • Passing Grade on Fundamentals of Engineering
Highly Desired Skills
  • Bachelor's degree, certificate or equivalent experience in power systems studies
  • Proficiency in project scheduling and schedule management, including Primavera P6 or similar software
  • Detailed understanding of regulatory frameworks (NERC, FERC, PJM/MISO).
  • The ability to communicate complex ideas verbally and in writing.
  • Proven technical knowledge and understanding of Transmission grid
  • Experience with MISO CROW and/or PJM eDART ticket submission and management.
  • Experience with MISO and/or PJM outage coordination processes and operational/network model submission requirements.
  • Working knowledge of power flow modeling concepts and tools (e.g., PSS®E or similar).
