A major Northeast utility has an amazing opportunity to join its Transmission System Planning team as a Senior Engineer. This critical role provides transmission focused subject matter expertise in power system studies and project development by carrying out assignments associated with the modeling and development of the transmission system.
The role requires extensive experience associated with modeling, analyses, and planning level designs of transmission lines and substation facilities in an electric power system. Typical reliability studies include analyses of power flow, transient stability, short circuit, and electromagnetic transients. This position also represents the company on regional and national transmission committees regarding transmission planning matters for NEPOOL, NERC, NPCC, and ISO ENE.
Essential Functions
- Develop and maintain the system models for transmission studies including collection, review, and/or modification of a variety of electric system parameters, equipment ratings, impedances, contingency sets, protection and control parameters, as well as system topology
- Conducts adequacy assessments and develops options to meet delivery objectives with latitude for independent action and decision making. Typical reliability studies include analyses of power flow, transient stability, short circuit, and electromagnetic transients. Identifies key technical issues and develops solutions
- Responsible to understand, interpret, and apply industry and corporate transmission planning standards and the regulations of Federal, State, and Local authorities
- Represents the department and the company on various industry related committees
- Participates with other utilities and the planning staff of ISO ENE in the preparation of regional transmission expansion studies
- Employs teamwork with engineers in System Planning, Transmission Asset Strategy, and engineers and operating personnel elsewhere in Electric Operations in performing analyses and providing technical support in planning and operational environments
- Plans, develops, and collaborates in the implementation and management of the life cycle plan for transmission assets
- Communicates clearly and effectively verbally and in writing the results of analyses and action plans
- Contributes to the development of the budget for Electric Operations through cost effective programs and projects to meet customer and system needs
- Trains junior staff in technical analyses and procedures
Technical Knowledge and Skills
- Experience with power system transmission analysis tools such as PSSE, TARA, ASPEN, PSCAD, or other similar analysis software
- Knowledge of programming language such as Python
- Knowledge of new technologies including but not limited to photovoltaic solar, electric vehicles, and battery
- Knowledge of electrical theory as applied to planning an electric power supply system
- Knowledge of National, State, and other planning standards and reliability criteria
- Good written and oral communication skills, including formal presentation
- Excellent team skills

Education
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Electrical preferred
- Advanced degree preferred
