Job summary

Metro’s South Transfer Station is hiring a Transfer Station Attendant to keep the facility clean, safe and compliant. This hands‑on, outdoor role involves working with a team to assist customers and support daily operations at an active transfer station.

Training will be provided on operations, equipment and safety practices, with emphasis on litter patrol, debris removal and safe use of tools in varied weather conditions.

Metro’s Waste Prevention and Environmental Services (WPES) department is looking for a Transfer Station Attendant to join the team at the Metro South Transfer Station. Transfer Station Attendants help keep the facility safe, clean and environmentally compliant. This is active, hands‑on work in a busy industrial setting, with most work taking place outdoors. You will work with a team, interact with customers and help maintain a safe and orderly facility. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys physical work, working outdoors and providing an essential public service. Training will be provided on Metro’s operations, equipment and safety practices.

As the Transfer Station Attendant you will:

• Perform litter patrol and remove debris from tipping floors, traffic lanes, load‑out areas, fencing lines and other areas of the transfer station.
• Patrol nearby roadways and surrounding areas to collect litter and identify illegal dumping, off‑site debris or spills associated with transfer station operations.
• Inspect and remove debris from stormwater drains, channels, gates and bioswales to help protect water quality and maintain proper drainage.
• Assist with unloading vehicles and recovery efforts on the tipping floor, including safely removing materials from the floor and surrounding areas.
• Learn to safely operate hand tools, power tools and other equipment used in transfer station operations through training.
• Conduct daily safety checks and report hazards, equipment or facility repair needs and opportunities to improve operations.
• Respond to emergencies and incidents by following site emergency protocols, identifying and reporting hazards, directing people away from danger and supporting traffic and site control.
• Provide courteous and professional customer service and communicate information about the site, recycling operations and materials.
• Follow safety procedures, standard operating procedures, environmental requirements and emergency protocols while working in an active industrial environment.

Minimum qualifications

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Any combination of experience, education, and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the essential job duties.

Special Requirements:

• Must possess, be able to obtain, maintain or complete the following training, licenses, and certifications within one (1) year of full‑time employment:
• First Aid/CPR certification
• Asbestos Awareness training

Required qualifications

• Ability to perform regular physical work, including extensive walking, bending, crouching, stooping, reaching and lifting.
• Ability to work primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions and around traffic, moving equipment, dust, dirt, odors and solid waste.
• Ability to work an assigned schedule that may include evenings, weekends and holidays.
• Ability to follow safety procedures, standard operating procedures and emergency protocols.

Working Conditions

This position works approximately 90% outdoors and 10% indoors at an active transfer station. Work involves regular standing, walking, bending, crouching, climbing, reaching, lifting and operating hand and power tools. The position regularly lifts up to 50 pounds and may occasionally lift objects weighing more than 50 pounds.

The work environment includes exposure to varying weather conditions, temperature extremes, noise, vibration, moving machinery, traffic, dust, dirt, fumes, strong or unpleasant odors, municipal and hazardous solid waste and other potential workplace hazards. Personal protective equipment is required and will be provided as appropriate.

The position requires a high degree of alertness and sustained attention to recognize hazards and maintain safe conditions around employees, customers, vehicles and equipment.

• Experience providing customer service in an active public‑facing environment.
• Experience identifying and reporting safety or environmental hazards.
• Experience working around environmental, stormwater or regulatory compliance requirements.
• OSHA-10 certification

COMPENSATION, BENEFITS AND REPRESENTATON

The full‑salary range for this position is step 1: $22.84 to step 7: $30.60.However, unless a candidate’s qualifications justify, based on the Oregon Pay Equity Act requirements and Metro’s internal equity review process, the appointment will likely be made between step : $22.84 to the equity range step 4: $26.44.

This position is eligible for overtime and is represented by AFSCME 3580. It is classified as a Transfer Station Attendant position.
