Job summary

South Coast AQMD seeks a transfer-ready Air Quality Instrument Specialist I to operate, maintain and test a range of air monitoring instruments, ensuring accurate data transmission and adherence to specifications. You will review data, perform basic calibrations, and assist in setup and maintenance of monitoring stations while supporting special studies and data reporting.

Qualifications

• Experience in operating, maintaining and testing electronic and mechanical air monitoring instrumentation.
• Ability to read and interpret instructions and maintain logs and reports.
• Formal education or equivalent in electronics, physics, chemistry, or related field and 1 year of related experience.

Responsibilities

• Operates, maintains, and tests air monitoring instrumentation to ensure data accuracy.
• Reviews data, performs calculations, and checks that readings meet specifications.
• Inspects meters, pumps, filters, and related components for issues.
• Repairs instrumentation by replacing parts and performing minor calibrations.
• Assists in setup, installation, and maintenance of air monitoring equipment.
• Performs periodic tests of sensors and data transmission systems.
• Notifies supervisor of abnormal fluctuations and arranges repairs as needed.
• Maintains logs and reports on instrumentation performance and servicing.
• Participates in studies, collects samples, and supports data gathering.
• Reads recorder charts and logs to forecast high-contaminant conditions.
• Orders supplies for instrumentation and monitoring facilities.
• Provides tours and public presentations about monitoring activities.

Job description

This is a transfer opportunity, open only to current South Coast AQMD employees, and is expected to result in a transfer list from which current and future Air Quality Instrument Specialist I vacancies may be filled.

Please note that a transfer application, once accepted, is active for six calendar months.

• Operates, maintains, and tests a variety of electronic and mechanical air monitoring instrumentation to ensure performance of instrumentation and transmission of data according to South Coast AQMD specifications.

• Reviews strip charts and other data and performs calculations to ascertain if instrument is functioning properly and that data falls within prescribed specifications and tolerance levels.

• Inspects meters, pumps, filters, recorders, wiring, tubing, circuit boards and other subsystems to determine cause of abnormal fluctuations of instrumentation readings.

• May repair instrumentation by replacing defective parts and make minor calibration adjustments to ensure instrumentation functions within specified standards.

• Assists in the set up and installation, repair and maintenance of air monitoring and meteorological instrumentation, including equipment used for data transmission, at air monitoring stations.

• Performs periodic instrumentation tests to measure voltage, resistance, and gas flows to test the accuracy of flowmeters, recorders, and data transmission.

• Notifies supervisor of abnormal instrumentation fluctuations and equipment failures in order to request repairs, calibrations, or backup instrumentation to avoid excessive loss of air monitoring data.

• Prepares, maintains, and submits logs, records or reports on instrumentation performance, maintenance, and servicing.

• Participates in special studies to gather data for impact studies and other projects; sets up equipment and conducts manual sampling of air contaminants which require the use of filters, sampling tubes, and other devices.

• Reads, interprets, and logs information from recorder charts; reduces data to ensure correct and timely forecasts of high-contaminant conditions and changes in environmental trends in relation to local ambient air quality standards.

• Orders supplies for the maintenance of instrumentation and air monitoring facilities.

• Makes public presentations and conducts tours of air monitoring stations.

• May respond to emergency service calls, as assigned or as the situation requires.

ELIGIBILITY

• Must currently be in the Air Quality Instrument Specialist I classification.

OR

• To transfer to a new class title, your current classification must have the exact same pay and you must complete the application demonstrating that you meet the minimum requirements for the new class.

Please note: To transfer, an employee must have passed probation (12-month initial probation or 6-month promotional probation).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EXPERIENCE:

EITHER I

• One year of experience as an Assistant Air Quality Instrument Specialist.

OR II

• Completion of at least 34 semester or 51 quarter units from an accredited college or university in electronics, physics, chemistry, or a related field, and one year of experience performing duties comparable to those of an Assistant Air Quality Instrument Specialist.

ABILITY TO: Read, interpret, and perform operating and maintenance procedures; understand and follow oral and written instructions for installing, operating, and servicing electronic and mechanical instrumentation; mathematically reduce data to useable form; respond to emergency service calls in a timely manner; maintain and order supplies; prepare and maintain logs, records, and reports; and work cooperatively with co-workers and the general public; operate electronic and mechanical instrumentation; set up and install electronic and mechanical instruments by using various tools, electronic testing equipment, material, procedures, and vehicles; disassemble, assemble, clean, adjust, lubricate, and replace worn parts of electronic and mechanical equipment; perform minor calibrations and adjust instruments to specifications.
