Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Participate in group and individual advisement and registration sessions for all new freshman and transfer students including CUNY Justice Academy students.
• Work with a caseload of students on academic probation to develop individualized academic plans.
• Advise CUNY Justice Academy (CJA) students at select partner campuses on transition requirements, transfer credit equivalencies, and course selection.
• Disseminate information on John Jay college and CUNY policies and procedures.
• Serve as information resource on Justice Academy policies and procedures for students, faculty and staff at partner campuses.
• Co-facilitate Justice Academy events with community college and John Jay partners.
• Maintain student transition tracking databases and CJA advising email account.
• Engage in professional development activities and stay current with standards and IT tools.

Position Overview

• Participate in group and individual advisement and registration sessions for all new freshman and transfer students including CUNY Justice Academy students.
• Work with a case load of students on academic probation to develop individualized academic plans.
• Advise CUNY Justice Academy (CJA) students at select partner campuses on transition requirements, transfer credit equivalencies, and selection of courses.
• Disseminate information on John Jay college and CUNY policies and procedures.
• Serve as information resource on Justice Academy policies and procedures for students, faculty and staff at partner campuses.
• Co-facilitate Justice Academy events with community college and John Jay partners.
• Maintain student transition tracking databases and CJA advising email account.
• Participate in cross-training on data reporting and transition cycle processes on CUNYFirst.
• Stay abreast of changing institutional information including admissions requirements, new programs, course changes, deadlines, important dates, costs, expanding facilities, updates in college‑wide initiatives, transfer requirements, and state and federal mandates.
• Engage in professional development activities such as joining professional organizations, staying current with professional standards and literature, and building information technology skills to enhance work performance.

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree required.

Other Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in psychology, sociology, counseling or related field
• One or two years of direct advising experience with one or more of the following student populations preferred: transfer students, disabled students, or students in academic difficulty
• Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills are required
• Ability to effectively interact with a diverse faculty, staff and student population while representing the Academic Advising Center and the College to internal and external constituents is required.

Cuny Title Overview

• Work individually with students to clarify academic policies and actions, assist with course selection/registration, and provide transfer support.
• Work with students to support degree progress utilizing various CUNY technologies.
• Provide referrals, resources, and workshop facilitation for academic support, student opportunities and scholarships.
• Discuss career exploration, major selection, career-degree alignment, and career milestones.
• Send student communications, document/track all student contact and respond to alerts and cases as assigned in current CUNY student platform.
• Provide basic information on financial literacy and financial aid resources/events, answer general FA questions (deadlines, types of aid etc.) and support outreach to students who need to take action to maintain aid.
• Run various reports within CUNY student platforms to support student-level caseload management, if applicable.
• May provide functional guidance to Part‑Time and/or junior staff.
• May engage in special projects or other duties as assigned.
