Job Duties

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Hampton Roads District has an exciting opportunity for a Traffic Signal Technician to perform traffic signal maintenance in accordance with all established safety standards, VDOT policies, procedures, and operational standards.

Core responsibilities include:

  1. Responding to complaints and reported malfunctions of traffic signals and troubleshooting electronic traffic control devices using frequency meters, volt meters, ohm meters, and soldering tools.
  2. Installing signal controllers and programming timings using laptops.
  3. Troubleshooting NEMA TS-1 and ATC cabinets with wiring schemes and hand tools.
  4. Using KITS system to check timings and monitor signals.
  5. Identifying intersection timing and detector problems.
  6. Responding to urgent 511 activities requiring immediate response.
  7. Monitoring and adjusting traffic signal timings.
  8. Maintaining traffic signals through routine, preventive, and replacement activities.
  9. Conducting scheduled checks of signal components via communication with central systems.
  10. Performing inspections and repairs of electronic devices.
  11. Communicating effectively with the public, police, VDOT employees, contractors, responders, and the general public regarding traffic signal operations and issues.
Required Skills
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and prioritize multiple assignments.
  • Knowledge of traffic signal maintenance and operations.
  • Familiarity with management systems, timing plans, graphic design, and computer use.
  • Physical ability to perform hands-on inspections and repairs, including working at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Proficiency with hand tools and testing equipment.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Knowledge of traffic control devices and relevant regulations.
  • Customer service skills.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Knowledge of traffic signal maintenance and operations.
  • Ability to prioritize and keep detailed records.
  • Experience with management systems, timing plans, and computer use.
  • Ability to serve in an on-call capacity and respond to emergencies.
  • Physical ability to perform inspections and work in various conditions.
  • Knowledge of traffic control devices and their operation.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Skill in customer service.
  • Valid Driver's License required; ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months.
Additional Considerations
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and VDOT rules and regulations.
  • IMSA Roadway Lighting certification.
  • Training or education in Electronics or related fields preferred.
  • Electrical or signal experience.
  • IMSA Traffic Signal Level I technician certification.
Special Instructions

Applicants will receive a confirmation upon successful submission. Background checks, DMV record check, physical, drug screen, references, and work history are required prior to employment. All drivers must obtain a CDL within 11 months if not already licensed. The position is essential and may require working outside normal hours, including weekends and holidays. Travel may be necessary.
