State of Indiana, through INDOT, seeks a Traffic Signal Technician to install, repair, and maintain traffic control devices across the Vincennes District. The role requires on‑call availability, weather resilience, and independent task execution.

The ideal candidate has CDL (Class A/B) with Indiana experience, knowledge of signal components, and the ability to travel to multiple state-maintained sites. Training and certification programs are provided by INDOT.

Qualifications

• Must possess a valid Class A or Class B CDL or obtain one within the first 90 days of employment.
• Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and testing of traffic signal components.
• Must have International Municipal Signal Association Level 2 Certification and INDOT Signal Technician Certification.
• High School diploma or equivalent plus 2+ years of experience in a similar role may be considered.

Responsibilities

• Perform maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, testing, and installation of traffic signal devices at intersections or in the shop.
• Replace malfunctioning controllers with temporary units during shop repairs.
• Operate testing devices (ohmmeter, voltmeter, ammeter, potentiometer) to identify electrical issues.
• Inspect and perform preventive maintenance on signal equipment and verify voltage and load.
• Respond to emergency after-hours call-outs and work in various weather conditions.

Role Overview:
Traffic Signal Technician installs, maintains, programs and repairs traffic control devices. Example traffic signals, pedestrian signals, vehicle detection systems and traffic malfunction units to name a few. Responsible for preventative maintenance on signal cabinets, general upkeep of state-maintained signals/flashers. Responding to emergency call outs for signals or winter operations. Being on call is a job requirement. Working in various weather conditions, long hours and overtime are also all requirements. Electrical experience a plus, on the job training provided. Bucket work required. Ideal candidate will be a self-starter who takes initiative, manages priorities, handles high stress environments well and is able to complete tasks independently. Training and completion of the INDOT District Signal Technician Training Certification is provided & required.

Location:
This position is in INDOT's Vincennes District, Traffic Division.

Pay Rate:
This position traditionally starts at an hourly rate of $24.26 but may be commensurate with education and work experience. Use our Compensation Calculator to view the total compensation package.

Candidates who have not completed the INDOT District Signal Technician Training Certification may be hired at a lower minimum salary, starting at $22.00/hr, and will then be eligible for a promotional increase upon achieving their certification.

CDL Positions:
Candidates with a current CDL and endorsements required by the district will earn an additional $1 per hour. Candidates without a CDL will be given 90 days to obtain their CDL and endorsements required by the district and will then earn an additional $1 per hour. CDL training provided onsite by certified INDOT staff.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

• Perform maintenance, repair, trouble shooting, testing, updating, diagnose malfunctions and installation of traffic signal/flasher control devices either at an intersection or in the shop, including.
• Replace malfunctioning controllers with temporary units when shop repairs are required.
• Operate testing devices for isolating and identifying electrical and electronic malfunctions (i.e. ohmmeter, voltmeter, ammeter, potentiometer, phase rotation indicators).
• Complete signal or flasher installations (i.e. poles, mast arms, or pedestals; span, catenary and down guys: signal/flasher heads: loop, sonic, magnetic or pad detectors; pre-timed or actuated controller, pedestrian signals, etc.).
• Inspect and perform routine preventive maintenance on traffic signal/flasher control equipment (i.e. check structural alignment, clearance, and security; clean, adjust, or replace contacts, fuses, relays motors: check voltage and amperage load).
• Respond to emergency off-hour call-outs immediately.
• Recommend modifications in the layout of intersections or technical aspects of equipment.
• Make field measurements, collect topographical data, and assist in the layout of a signalized intersection.
• Assist contractors with technical aspects of traffic signal equipment operations.
• Maintain and update electronic files of all traffic signals for signal timing, emergency call-outs, and equipment inventory.
• Workday attendance at assigned worksite(s) is an essential function of this position.

What You'll Need for Success:

Individuals in this role should minimally be able to articulate or demonstrate the following:

• Be willing to travel with reasonable accommodation.
• Must possess a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or obtain one with the first 90 days of employment.
• Knowledge of the operation, management, and maintenance of traffic signal components.
• Working knowledge of signal/flasher specifications in Indiana Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and the operation and layout of such equipment.
• Must have and maintain International Municipal Signal Association Level 2 Certification and INDOT Signal Technician Certification.
• Ability to read and analyze diagrams, electrical drawings, and manuals.
• Skilled in use of standard diagnostic test equipment and personal computer.
• Ability to troubleshoot electronic equipment along with reading and interpreting manuals.
• Ability to travel to various State of Indiana maintained signal/flasher installations on an immediate basis.
• Must be able to endure exposure to inclement weather.
• Must be available for Winter Operations duties.

A degree is not required. However, a High School diploma or High School Equivalent plus 2+ years of experience applying the outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role may be considered.
