WHAT YOU'LL DO:
  • Install, inspect, test, and repair electrical and electronic signal control equipment to ensure correct timing and operations; make adjustments and repairs as needed
  • Install, replace, and repair electrical control devices and damaged poles
  • Maintain and repair traffic signals
  • Perform preventive maintenance on traffic signal control equipment and related systems, including painting and cleaning of equipment
  • Install and modify pull boxes and conduits
  • Replace lamps in traffic signal heads and streetlights
  • Repair damaged and malfunctioning signal and safety lighting equipment
PAYROLL/CLASSIFICATION TITLE:

Maintenance Specialist

SUPERVISION EXERCISED/SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Incumbents may serve as lead workers, assigning work and monitoring work completion. Receives general supervision on routine items which are performed according to established standards and procedures and receives specific work instruction regarding non-routine matters and deadlines.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

This classification is distinguished from the Maintenance Technician, Senior in that it performs both skilled maintenance and skilled repair work and provides troubleshooting of equipment issues.

WORK SCHEDULE:

The normal work week is Monday through Thursday, 7:00 am to 4:30 pm, and alternating Fridays, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. The role also requires participation in a rotating after-hours on-call schedule. Depending on the work assignment, staff may be assigned to a shift that is outside the standard work hours. In addition, this position may be required to be available to work additional hours in response to peaks in workloads and changes in department needs. The standard work environment varies depending on assignment, but is typically either primarily in an office setting or out in the field. The City does not offer hybrid or remote work.

This class specification represents only the core areas of responsibility; specific position assignments will vary depending on the needs of the Department.

  • Performs skilled maintenance and repair work in assigned trade and/or area; plans, prioritizes and schedules activities to complete repairs and maintenance work in an efficient and timely manner; selects proper tools and equipment for assignment; monitors work site safety; performs work following established safety policies and procedures and applicable codes and regulations.
  • Performs maintenance inspections; troubleshoots equipment, maintenance and/or system issues; identifies repair needs; reviews repair versus replacement costs and makes recommendations; performs required repairs or works with outside contractors for project completion.
  • Organizes and maintains assigned equipment and tools; inspects, cleans and performs preventative maintenance to ensure operability and reliability of equipment and tools.
  • Reviews equipment and materials required for daily maintenance and work projects; initiates requests for or purchases approved materials and supplies.
  • Prepares and/or maintains activity records, logs, work orders, material requests, reports and/or technical documentation for equipment or building systems.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.
EDUCATION:
  • High School Diploma or GED
EXPERIENCE:
  • Four (4) years of experience related to traffic signal repair or other electrical repair work
LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS:
  • A valid California Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record may be required for some positions
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be able to communicate in English effectively, both orally and in writing
HIGHLY DESIRABLE:
  • Possession of a valid International Municipal Signal Association (I.M.S.A.) level I or II certification
UNION MEMBERSHIP:

Positions in this classification are represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE).

NOTE:

For most positions, the City of Oxnard relies on office automation (Microsoft Office/Google) and web-based enabled tools, therefore candidates must be proficient and comfortable with computer use to perform functions associated with ongoing work.

Regular and reliable attendance, effective communication skills, and development of effective working relationships are requirements of all positions.

Employees are required to participate in the City's direct deposit plan and are paid on a bi-weekly basis.

This position requires a 12- month probationary period.

Pursuant to California Government Code Section 3100, all public employees are required to serve as disaster service workers subject to such disaster service activities as may be assigned to them.
