Job summary

A full-service engineering firm is seeking an experienced Traffic Engineer in Harrisburg to lead traffic control and policy development for work zones. This role involves collaborating with teams on safety strategies and innovative traffic solutions. The ideal candidate holds a Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, has a P.E. license, and 6+ years of relevant experience. Attractive compensation and hybrid work are offered.

Responsibilities

• Perform traffic engineering research on work zone methodologies.
• Create policies and guidelines for work zone safety and efficiency.
• Evaluate existing work zone standards with internal and external teams.
• Review and develop maintenance of traffic plans for major projects that includes consideration for workers, vehicles, and vulnerable road users.
• Planning, design, and implementation of ITS work zone applications to implement technology to provide better traveler information to motorists concerning work zones.
• Assist with Speed Safety Camera programs for work zones including program management, implementation, assessment of program effectiveness, quality assurance and vendor coordination.
• Ability to visit construction sites, perform physical investigation of work zone setups and field conditions, and monitor speed safety camera installations in the field.

Job description

RK&K is seeking an experienced Traffic Engineer with 6+ years of expertise in work zone traffic control and policy development. This role supports high-impact projects through open-end contracts with state and local agencies, focusing on advancing work zone safety and compliance. With increasing emphasis on federal and state mandates, there's a growing need for innovative, policy-driven traffic solutions. You'll help shape and implement strategies that improve operations and integrate emerging technologies. Collaborate with a talented, multidisciplinary team using state-of-the-art tools to deliver meaningful results.

Essential Functions

• You will perform traffic engineering research to identify and analyze work zone traffic control methodologies, principals, products, and applications
• Create work zone policies, guidelines, and engineering standards to improve work zone design, implementation, and operations to enhance safety and efficiency
• Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to evaluate the effectiveness of existing work zone standards and traffic control plans to identify areas for improvement
• Review and develop maintenance of traffic plans for major projects that includes consideration for workers, vehicles, and vulnerable road users

Required Skills and Experience

• Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related
• Registered P.E. license
• Six (6) + years of experience in traffic engineering, particularly work zones
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills including presentation skills and public speaking
• Problem-solving and analytical abilities, with the ability to use data and research to inform decision making
• Strong knowledge of work zone traffic control strategies, safety strategies, the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and other relevant standards and regulations

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with project management and coordination
• Familiarity with state and local traffic engineering standards
