Job summary

GFT seeks an emerging Traffic/ITS Project Engineer to support the Transportation Group in Metro Nashville, TN. This full-time role operates on a hybrid model with at least three days onsite, contributing to highway, bridge, and traffic signal projects to improve mobility and safety.

You will perform traffic analysis, modeling, and roadway design, collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, prepare construction documents, and assist with field investigations and ITS installations to deliver

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Electrical engineering or related field.
  • On the path to Professional Engineer licensure preferred.
  • 3–5 years of relevant traffic/ITS experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform traffic analysis, modeling, and roadway design to improve safety and mobility.
  • Prepare designs with the lead engineer and other disciplines per scope.
  • Analyze ITS design and sub-systems; develop mitigations for construction impacts.
  • Develop drawings, specs, cost estimates, and bid packages.
  • Communicate with clients on project updates and task issues.
  • Support field investigations and testing of ITS field equipment.

What You Will Do

As GFT continues to grow and expand, we are seeking an emerging Traffic/ITS Project Engineer to support our Transportation Group in Metro Nashville, TN. This role follows a hybrid work model, requiring a minimum of 3 days of onsite office attendance.

What You’ll Be Challenged To Do

In this role, you’ll apply your technical expertise in traffic analysis, modeling, and roadway design to improve the safety, reliability, and efficiency of transportation systems across Tennessee and the Southeast. You’ll collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to develop solutions that ease congestion, enhance mobility, and create safer streets for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. From analyzing traffic flow and designing signals to preparing construction documents and supporting field investigations, your work will directly impact the quality of life in the community by making travel safer and more efficient. In this capacity, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following
  • Perform engineering design services throughout the project life-cycle, from concept through construction.
  • Work with lead engineer and other disciplines to prepare appropriate designs, as dictated by the scope of work.
  • Perform engineering analysis related to design, implementation, and operations of ITS elements and sub-systems.
  • Analyze moderate to complex design problems requiring the development of new or improved techniques or procedures.
  • Assess the impact of construction and utility work on the ITS infrastructure and develop necessary mitigation measures.
  • Develop engineering drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and prepare final bid packages.
  • Communicates with clients on task oriented issues and on project issues under the direction of the project manager.
  • Use strong writing skills and engineering planning to develop guidance documents and reports such as systems engineering documents.
  • Interact with clients to relay clear, concise and consistent project related updates.
  • Participate in projects by completing tasks within schedule and budget.
  • Participate in meetings, seminars, conferences, and committees.
  • Perform project site visits and field work.
  • Assist with testing and resolving technical issues during new installations or modifications of ITS field equipment.
Education | Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Civil or Electrical preferred) or relevant discipline
  • Professional Engineer license preferred (at a minimum, you should be on the path to obtain P.E. licensure)
  • 3-5 years' experience working in a relevant field
  • Traffic signal and/or fiber optic communication system design experience is preferred
  • Knowledge of ITS Architecture is a plus
  • Experience with CADD (e.g., MicroStation)
  • Expertise with MS Office
  • Ability to travel as needed
  • Some experience with management of project tasks
  • Strong desire in developing a career in ITS
Compensation

The salary range for this role is $95,000 - $120,000. Salary is dependent upon experience and geographic location.
