Job summary

Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson in Charleston, SC, seeks a Traffic Design Engineer to apply a blend of electrical, civil and systems engineering to traffic and smart mobility projects.

You will perform CAD traffic signal design, corridor retiming, field work, design computations and documentation, collaborating with clients across the southeastern US, while pursuing EIT/EI as needed. Immigration sponsorship is not available for this position.

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited engineering degree required.
• EIT/EI certification required or commitment to obtain within 6 months for non-civil degrees.
• 0-5 years of engineering experience in mechanical, electrical, industrial, civil or systems domains.
• Strong written and verbal communication with clients across the southeastern US.
• Willingness to travel for field work, including occasional overnight trips.
• Curiosity about traffic signals, connected devices, field equipment, and networks.

Job description

Traffic Design Engineer

Location: Charleston, SC

Position Type: Full-Time/Regular

Position summary: Responsible for engineering and smart mobility design using knowledge of general engineering principles and practices to interpret, organize, execute and coordinate assignments. This job involves a strong mix of electrical, civil, and systems engineering principles.

This role is great for all ABET engineering graduates with courage and a love of adventure who are interested in applied technology, field troubleshooting, transportation systems, communications, controls, or smart mobility. Immigration sponsorship or support (e.g. H1B, F-1 CPT/OPT/STEM OPT) is not available for this position, except for qualified candidates eligible for the TN visa classification.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Assist with traffic signal design, including CAD and field work
• Assist with traffic signal corridor retiming, including field work, implementation, and fine-tuning
• Assist with design computations and plan preparations
• Assist with other traffic and safety studies, including field work
• Assist in designing projects in accordance with client specifications and guidelines, using design software and drawing tools

Required Skills

• Valid Driver's License Required
• Must successfully complete and pass JMT's Motor Vehicle screening

Required Experience

• Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, industrial, civil or systems engineering from an ABET accredited engineering program
• Engineer-in-training (EIT/EI) certification (for applicants with a civil engineering degree)
  • Commitment to obtain EIT/EI within 6 months for all other engineering degrees
• 0-5 years of experience in mechanical, electrical, industrial, civil or systems engineering
• An ability to write in a professional and grammatically correct manner
• An ability to communicate clearly and professionally with a variety of clients across the southeastern US
• Willingness and ability to travel for field work, including occasional overnight trips, consistent with project needs.
• Curiosity about traffic signals, connected devices, field equipment, and communication networks

Qualifications Preferred

• Traffic or traffic signal experience
• IT, telecom, or AI experience
• Ability to code and script using current languages and a strong foundation in logic-based systems
• Networking competency, including TCP/IP topology, routing/switching, & related troubleshooting

Working Conditions

Work is performed within a general office environment 75% of the time but may involve up to 25% field work. Work is generally sedentary in nature but will require regular standing, walking, lifting, and opening field equipment. Some work will also be performed within a technical lab, working with live electrical components and circuitry. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.

Field work is required on occasion where work may be conducted outside and/or roadside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Field work is required on occasion before and after normal working hours and in low-light conditions. Some lifting (up to 50 lbs) may be required as needed. All field work will require travel within the state and occasionally out of state, including overnight trips.
