Job summary

City of Fulshear seeks an entry-level Traffic Control Maintenance Technician I to support safe travel by installing, maintaining, and inspecting traffic signs and related devices. The role works under supervision to develop skills and progress within the traffic-control maintenance series.

You will assist with inspections, repairs, and documentation, while coordinating with the Crew Lead and other city staff. A valid Texas driver’s license and IMSA certifications are required or soon obtainable.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED with 1 year of technical experience in traffic-control or traffic-signal maintenance.
• Valid Texas driver’s license.
• IMSA Work Zone Temporary Traffic Control Technician certification, or ability to obtain within six months.
• IMSA Signs and Pavement Markings Technician I certification, or ability to obtain within eighteen months.

Responsibilities

• Installs, maintains, and repairs traffic signs, pavement markings, barricades, and related devices under supervision.
• Responds to service requests and reports damaged, missing, or unsafe traffic-control devices.
• Fabricates signs and maintains accurate material, inventory, and asset records.
• Safely operates and maintains assigned vehicles, tools, and equipment.
• Communicates work status, material needs, and safety concerns to the Crew Lead.
• Supports emergency traffic control and road closures as needed.

Traffic Control Maintenance Technician I

POSITION PURPOSE

The Traffic Control Maintenance Technician I supports safe, orderly travel throughout the City by assisting with the installation, maintenance, repair, and inspection of traffic signs, pavement markings, and related traffic-control devices. Working under direct or general supervision, this entry-level position develops the technical skills and field knowledge required to perform increasingly complex assignments and progress within the traffic-control maintenance series.

Service Delivery & Community Impact

• Installs, repairs, and maintains traffic signs, pavement markings, barricades, and related devices under appropriate supervision.
• Responds to assigned service requests and reports damaged, missing, or unsafe traffic-control devices.

Operational Excellence & Program Management

• Assists with inspecting and troubleshooting traffic signals, school-zone flashers, traffic counters, radar equipment, and changeable message boards.
• Fabricates signs and maintains accurate material, inventory, maintenance, and asset records.
• Safely operates and maintains assigned vehicles, tools, and equipment.

Collaboration & Relationship Building

• Works cooperatively with City employees, contractors, vendors, and the public to complete assignments safely and efficiently.
• Communicates work status, material needs, equipment problems, and safety concerns to the Crew Lead.

Required

• High school diploma or GED and one (1) year of technical experience in traffic-control or traffic-signal maintenance; equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

• Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screening, criminal background investigation, physical agility examination, and motor vehicle record review.
• Must maintain required licenses and certifications throughout employment.
• Must maintain eligibility to operate City vehicles and equipment when required.
• Regular and reliable attendance is essential.
• May be designated essential personnel during emergencies, disasters, or other critical incidents and may be required to perform duties outside normal responsibilities or work hours.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed indoors and outdoors on City streets, rights-of-way, traffic-control work sites, and in a sign fabrication or maintenance facility. Duties require frequent standing, walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, squatting, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying. Employees may operate ladders, lifts, forklifts, vehicles, and power tools; work near moving traffic; and be exposed to weather, dust, noise, exhaust, fumes, and other hazards. The position may require lifting or moving materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and, with assistance, heavier items up to 100 pounds. Evening, weekend, on-call, and emergency work may be required.
